am doing an in compartment motor detail & header install.
putting on the ford smog pump delete kit. do you just plug
the vacuum fittings at the relays on the shock tower, or is
there something else i need to do w/the lines? will this set
a check engine light from the computer? took this stuff off
for a cleaner look & easier access. its an 86 5.0 capri.
if there is something else i need to do w/the smog, i would
appreciate knowing. thanks for any help.--irv toms

What do the vaccum used for, evap? or are they used to control something on the smog pump?

Irvin,
I have the same questions about my 82 5.0 RS.
I am putting headers on and want to eliminate the air pump.
I see that I can get an idler wheel on a bracket that takes the place of the pump in the serpentine belt line. Do I just remove all of the hoses and plug the steel lines that run to the back of the heads?

I am also, in the near future, going to put on an edelbrock manifold, 4bbl carb and put in a cam.

Is there any more to taking off the air pump?

instead of buying the $80 bracket, i just got a pulley off of ebay and ran a long bolt through where the top of the smog pump bolted, looks factory and cost me about $15. pics upon request.

Perhaps I'm missing something here, but wouldn't it be easier to just install a shorter belt, eliminating the pump completely, and killing the need for a dead pulley?

no, the tensioner will push down on the belt and it could rub on the belt below where it goes over the water pump, mine did this and toasted a belt.

A short belt will work fine. No need for an idler pulley. Carquest/Gates part number K060775.

Here is a pic of the used-up stock engine with a short belt I pulled out of my 86 GT. I ran the car like this for about a month with no problems. The new engine is using a short belt as well.

On the above image, notice the altered routing.

Eliminates the possible belt rubbing issue... :D

Take it above and around the crank to the water pump. It won't be as close to the tensioner.

Here is my car before I sold it... Ford Motorsport Power Steering relocation/A/C delete kit, removed smog pump, stock pullies and I did not alter the tensioner. You just need the right size belt. It took me several trips to the parts store to get the right size.

Thanks for the belt routing info...that seems easy & cheaper than
getting the pulley.
