I am having a problem with the Autometer fuel gage wiring in my 85GT. I used the yellow/white wire that is supposed to be from the fuel level sender and connected it to the Autometer gage. The tank is about 1/4 full but I get .02 Ohms between the sender wire (yellow/white) and ground. It should be a lot higher than that. When I turned the key to the ON (not run) position for the first time to test the gages, the fuel gage needle went way past full. I double checked the wiring and can't figure out what is going on.
What am I doing wrong??
Thanks
Steve

Is it the right gauge for the sender? I had the same problem and it turned out that I got a gauge with the wrong ohm range.

you have the wrong gauge either get a auto meter sender or get the right gauge

It is the right gage.
Do I need to run a dedicated line to the sender? I thought I'd be able to use the factory wiring but the instructions say to run a wire to the sender. I assume that's for newly built cars like race cars or hot rods.
The thing is, I do not get a reading within the ohm range of the oem sender when I test the oe fuel level sender to ground. In other words, one lead of the multimeter on the fuel level sender wire and the other lead on a ground wire. I get .02 Ohms or something like that . It should be somewhere between 10ohms and 70ohms at 1/4 tank of gas. I'm thinking I need a dedicated wire run straight to the sender from the gage.
The sender is ok. It worked fine right before I took OEM dash out.

Its not too hard to add a dedicated wire, thats what I did and it works fine.

yea i just cut it from the plug in the trunk and zip tied a wire and ran it with the speaker wires and ran it up to the dash

Cool, that's what I'll do then.
Thanks!

Just an update...sorry it took so long.
It turns out that I was using a wire that was labeled as a ground (black with yellow hash marks) but wasn't worth a crap. After changing the ground, the factory wiring works just fine for wiring in the Autometer gages. I didn't have to run any extra wiring at all.
I had my doubts about cutting inside the dash to put in the MC Machine dash plate / Autometer gages but I'm glad I finally did it. It looks awesome. I had the plate anodized black and then painted the trim rings to match the grey on the rest of the dash.
