I'm new to the group but jumping in feet first.

I am restoring my 83 GT convertible and have a couple of questions. I have searched the forums and don't believe I am revisiting any topics.

My Questions:

What is the proper paint code for the black hood stripe for the 83 GT?

Is it the same paint as the blacked-out trim on the rest of the car? If not, what is suitable paint code for the trim?

What about the factory pin-stripe along side the hood stripe, does anyone have them in Medium Charcoal and Black? NOS or reproduction?

Any help would be appreciated, the car is at the painters now and I am trying to round up the correct information to relay to the painter.

Thanks

This helps, but I’ll try to restate my question because I’m not sure I was clear the first time.

I know that the hood strip, lower rockers and window/door trim are all “blacked-out”.

What I am unsure of is; are all these areas painted with the same code of black paint? I would call the sheen either low gloss or satin.

In other words, if the painter uses, for example (PPG #9381 flat black) in a single stage paint, would the hood stripe portion need to have flattener added to give a different sheen to the hood or was the original hood stripe that same exact sheen as the trim around windows, etc.? I don’t recall the original hood stripe being an actual “flat” black but rather a low gloss or satin sheen. Anybody know for sure?

As for the pin-stripe, the factory stripe on my car appeared to be laid down along the edge of the black hood paint. The stripe is about 3/8” Med. Charcoal then 1/8” Black then 1/8” Med. Charcoal. All on one pin-stripe. I am wondering if anyone has these in NOS or reproduction.

These guys make a great repro kit from what I'm told -- .http://www.phoenixgraphix.com/ford/sk107.htm?. I called and they won't sell separate pieces of the kit - all or nothing for $109.

As for our hood and trim paint, I've been told they were both the same color Satin Black exactly -- makes sense because it would look odd to have so many different shades of black on trim, cowl vent grille, and hood. I've purchased trim paint from Pepboys as was told this was a great match - painted some window screens with it and looks great - can't wait to reshoot the car now.

I talked to a guy at Phoenix graphics last week and then again today. He indicated to me that they had purchased the remaining hood stripes from Ford and that the ones they have listed are OEM and the only ones that they have.

Problem for me is that they do not have the Medium Charcoal Metallic stripes. He indicated that I could have custom pin-stripes made in the correct colors from $1200! Ouch!

I figure last resort would be to find a 1/2" Medium Charcoal Stripe to lay down each side of the painted strip and then follow up with the 1/8" Black Stripe overlayed onto the charcoal stripe. Thoughts?

I thought that the black on the stripe was the same on the hood as the trim and rockers, just looking for some others to verify it for me.

Thanks to all who have replied so far. I stumbled across this board a few weeks ago and the folks here seem at lot more "down to earth" than some of the other forums I have visited.

Too bad Phoenix doesn't have any of the color you need. If you're going to use a non-OEM stripe, remember they will likely not be pre-molded and may be a royal pain to put on correctly.

I just found this on ebay - may not be what you're looking for, but do an occasional search and see if you find it (I should've bought the OEM Med. Red kit I saw on there last year). http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4550001462&category=34204. Seller has good feedback too.

I started repainting my 'vert trim pieces and am very pleased with the results so far - just need to figure out how to take the old GT hood decal and stripes off so I can repaint the hood and install a new decal and stripes. Heard 3M remover works well but I've never done it and don't want to destroy anything.

Hey 84,

Try a hair dryer to soften a corner and keep working it from there. It may not work being 20 years old though. I have used the 3M stuff also.

If you are repainting the hood anyways you can sand it off. You can't really hurt anything.

Has anybody seen a vinyl black out hood stripe kit for the 83 GT? Seems like a marketable item given the 83 and 84 hood black outs were painted and the 85/86 were decals.
