They are 3.5 inches. Get good ones if you can and amplify them. Don't worry about the back speakers so much because they are so far back they don't do much of anything for sound because they point at each other on the hatch floor. They do fill in 'some' mid range...

Hell, even after putting in good dash speakers and amplifying them its still less than ideal because of their location and poor bass reporduction.

I'm still deciding on what to do in my capri. I don't want to do door speakers, and I don't want to do kick panel pods, but I want better sound.

I'd like to make custom door panels that look stock but also don't make door speakers look out of place. I was thinking if I could make the lower area of the door panel from a cloth material and have a hidden door speaker.

I've given up on having good sounding bass in my Mustang. I'm just happy to drive it.. hearing the engine is fine enough for me... even with the radio down low.

I really don't want to cut anything up so I'll just live with it.

However the Fairmont and the LX both have great sound over the Mustang. Something to do with the way the speakers are mounted and the demensions of the trunks.

Funny thing... I put the same exact system in my old Futura that was in the Fairmont and it sounded nothing like the Fairmonts. Again... the trunks were a bit different.

What I usually use is 3.5 2 ways up under the dash and 6X9 3 ways in the rear. The Mustang has 5X7 3 ways in the rear though.

i have put pretty good boston acoustics in the rear but they sound good because i have updated the interior with a 90 interior,

i just wanna finish the sound system in the capri this season, im thinkin some kenwood 3 1/2 in the dash, then i already have a 4 channel amp for the interior speakers, and im goin to build a custom enclosure for where the back seats used to be with 2 12" subs and an amp i already have. should be pretty sweet.......

I've done the stereo thing a few times in my Mustang. Now that I have a daily driver, and use the stang just for cruising, I took the stereo right out, and don't plan on putting another one back in. I like having the volume control under my right foot ;)

If I could turn back the clock about 10 years, and redo all the stereo stuff I did to the Mustang, I'd do the following (assuming that we are talking about a hatchback here):

Update the alternator, buy a decent deck, buy a 4 channel amp that puts out an honest 100watts rms per channel (a high end Rockford, Alpine, Phoenix Gold...whatever your brand preference) a 12"sub, and a pair of 6x9s.

Build a box that fits in your hatch to hold the amp, sub and 6x9s. Build a couple of heavy duty handles into the box that you can grab on to lift it out. Go buy some high quality electrical connectors that will allow you to connect/disconnect the box with very little hassle.

If you are running a good amp, this will be plenty loud enough. It will cover the full frequency range. It will be easy to remove if you need to haul something or take the car to the track, and easy to take with you if you ever sell the car, easy to build, easy to set up, easy to hide (if it fits behind the back seat, and it's low enough to cover with the cargo cover, you're set) You get the idea.

The factory speaker locations/sizes couldn't be much worse. I've been through 4 complete re-dos of the stereo in that car, and this set up was by far the best.

The time I spent designing and building the systems was fun. But I think about the perfectly good door panels I cut up to install 6.5's in the doors, and the dash pad that got distroyed by the 3.5s I put under there, and I wonder......what I was thinking.
