View Full Version : interior swap ?
I know I'll get crap for this but I have to do it. My interior is junk in my 1986 GT convert but I have a really clean and nice interior out of a wrecked convert 1992 4banger(BLACK) I think everyting will work but I'm not sure about the dash. Will it fit in the 86? Thanks for the help

Yep, it'll fit. Theres a thread on it in the archives.. I'll find it in a sec..
BUT FYI: All 79 - 86 Dashes were painted from factory (not moulded in the color) unlike the rest of the interior plastics... Which would mean, you could save yourself alot of headaches and simply paint the dash.. I have a thread on that here to... Hold one Ill find gtlukes Dash swap thread, and my Dash painting thread.

Here's Lukes thread on swapping..

First, welcome to the site.
A lot of people have done the swap. I am guessing that the wiring would be the toughest part. I don't think you'll get much flack for changing dashes. Is your dash okay? You could paint it to match the rest of the later model Black interior.

If you keep the stock dash and console, I believe everything else will be fine. I know there are a few subtle differences (gap with quarter windows, etc.) but it should be pretty straight forward. More resources on the board are 50Proof, v8Only, GT350R, and Jeepman1.

Thanks for the info and the welcome. I have a couple newer fox bodies but this is my first 4 eye car. I'm going to leave the body the same since I love the look but like I said the interior is shot so might as well change it. Thanks again.

Good luck with it! Remember to take lots of pictures for us :D
WOW I just got done reading the post on how you change the dash and I think I'll just change everything BUT the dash. I'll just get a dash cover and the cool Autometer gauge plate and call it good. Paint sounds GREAT ;)

Talk to "Mike Croke" or "evlgt85" They are the site owners and Mike makes aluminum dash plates, and has done custom Autometer gauges and such in Skyes 85 GT... I'll try to find a thread on that too...

read my bro's guide first
http://50stangs.com/techarticles/foxbodyinteriorguide.html
this will tell you EVERYTHING you need to know.
this isn't as straight forward as you think.
first off, the front seatbelts, and rears, won't fit. Front belts 91-93 have a longer mounting bracket and wont fit your car. You have a vert. forget what I said. the only hope of getting black belts in the front of your car is 79-83 front hatch/notch/vert belts with ONLY 83 seatbelt brackets. Rears are set up for shoulder harness, and won't work either ( anything will work if you're willing to spend a lot of time on it though)
the rear back seat won't really work and be functional either due to a different design. the rear 1/4 panels will bolt on, but won't look right unless you put the 87+ 1/4 windows on too, + the rear 1/4's are setup for rear shoulder belts, so they'll look kinda funny with open holes and no shoulder belts. Additionally, those panels have the mounting hole for the front belts higher, so you're gonna have a fat hole sticking out.
not trying to discourage you. Just trying to offer experience. My bro and I spent WAY too much time on our interiors, when we could have spent the time and money on going faster instead.
If you're set on black interior, use a custom upholstered rear seat, the 92 carpet, front seats, and door panels, 83 rear 1/4 panels, 79-83 rear seatbelts and fronts.
you really should read that article above.
btw, if this interior is super clean, you can get upwards of a grand for that whole interior, as it's in demand big time with the aero car guys. My suggestion? sell that interior for big money and restore your original 86 interior. Best of luck either way!
btw, i've got an 86 vert that I've spent an enormous amount of time converting to black interior, it's NOT easy. I've got some leftover parts, but an 83 rear black vinyl seat will swap right in, along with the 83 rear vert 1/4 panels.
here is an example of what is a direct fit, all from an 83 vert. this is my 86 vert conversion (part of it, anyhow)
