Steering column that is.

I was thinking about stuffing a '78 Fairmont Sport Steering wheel on my '84 by modifiying the Sport wheel with slip rings from an '84 steering wheel and modify the center to be the horn button - a la Mustang II.

BUT, my '84 has a tilt steering column and my plan involved using a Fairmont splined non-tilt steering shaft. So I thought, no problem, convert to non-tilt since I don't use it anyway. HOWEVER, are the tilt turn signal switch used in the '84 compatible with a non-tilt steering column?

I guess it's worth $2 to for experiment in the wrecking yard...

Yes, they are the same switch. Tilt in these cars seems to be a waste, every one I've had with it ended up in the standard position anyway.

the only diferance in the turn signal switches is the "Flash To Pass" option

Cool, Thanks!

I picked up a splined steering shaft from an '82 Fairmont today. I have an old Fairmont steering column to play with but the threads of the old column's steering shaft were stripped. From what I can see, if a person wanted to install a steering wheel which uses a splined steering shaft rather than the two flat sided shaft our '84 and newer cars used, all a person needs to do is swap the shaft - unless the steering column is a tilt column like my '84. Then I think a new column is needed but I didn't check to see if the old tilt column length is the same if the tilt mechanisim is removed and a non tilt ignition switch holder and column lock is installed.

More to come...
