I love the looks of the front air dam on the 82GT/pacecar/capri...etc (you get the idea) But I've always thought that the side of the car was missing something. It's got that low, mean look at the front, but the sides look bare.

You guys got any pics of any mustangs/capris with the factory front air dam and side skirts on em? Perhaps a rear valance as well?

Thanks

I kind of agree...and so did ascMcLaren. :)

Either the 87+ Mustang GT side skirts or the ascMcLaren side skirts look really nice with the front air dam. If you had the $$ I would get the ascMcLaren ones as you don't see them on anything other than asc cars...so it would be pretty different.

if you can find the DECH (i think) side skirts
they look good on the older rides as they
butt right up to the factory belt moulding.
but... they are scarce. they also had a
rear lower bumper cover. hope to get
mine on this summer! (fingers crossed)

Thanks for the suggestions guys. :)

I remember seeing the Dech kit, and I really liked it on the 87+ cars, but I don't think it would be suited to the 'square' look of the 82. That kit is a bit too rounded. I like a car when it flows, and I think that those pieces would look out of place. I could be wrong though. I'd have to see a picture of a capri or a Mustang with these pieces on.

The 87+ side skirts/rear bumper I'm not a huge fan of. It has to be one of the most rediculous things Ford ever put on a Mustang. Like really, how many times do you have to put the word 'Mustang' on the car. Did they think the owner might forget what they are driving? I have seen some examples where people have filled in the Mustang letters on these pieces with some sort of body filler and it looked pretty good, so that would be an option. However then there is an issue with the side mouldings on the car. I looked up these pieces, and they have the 87+ style body mouldings attached to them, I don't know if I'd be able to cut those off and still have it fit properly.

I was thinkng the Saleen style or maybe the Xenon style. Any other pictures/suggestions?

I kinda agree about the front valence on an 82 leaving the rest of the car looking a bit thin. One of the best ways I've seen is to put a wider tires on the car. That fills out the fenders nicely makes the car look more muscular without adding a bunch of body panels. Here's a picture of one of my favorite four eyes:

I have a '83 Capri L that came with the ASC McLaren front air dam and rear spoiler new from the dealer. I believe there were 300 cars sold by Mercury in this configuration. I've purchased and installed the ASC McLaren side skirts and rear valance. The side skirts go on easy. There are recesses for a screw into the front and rear fender and then a flange for screwing into the door sill. The rear valance mounts under the factory bumper using the same plastic pushpins that hold the bumper cover on. It also needs a screw placed into the rear wheelhousing at the leading edge on each side. The rear valance is hard for one person to install. You really need a friend. You also need a thin rubber window molding between the rear valance and the bumper to hide the gap between the pieces. I used Chrysler minivan window molding my brother gave me. It worked fine.

Good Luck!

And exactly how did you arrive at THAT number? Cause thats pretty unusual that Mercury would track an item that was being sold to dealerships from a third party. Add to that we have extremely shaky numbers for most everything related to the Capri.

Where/who did you get that from?

I agree the sides and back are missing something.

One thing I saw last summer that I LOVED, was a black 82 GT T-Top, with Saleen side skirts and rear bumper cover. I wish I would have taken pictures, but the rear bumper mad all the lines flow perfectly...

The question was asked how I knew that 300 were made - '83 Capri L's with ASCMcLaren front air dam and rear lip spoiler. Here is the story. I had my car maybe a month when I drove to Plymouth, MI for the balloon festival. I ended up breaking the left front corner off of the front spoiler in a ditch they directed traffic through at the event. I ended up meeting a gentleman from ASCMcLaren named Horace Klaus who was in charge of the Capri program at the time. Fortunately, he gave me the pieces I needed to fix my car, no charge. I believe the number he told me was 300 (it could have been 100) Capris were outfitted from the factory by ASC before shipment to the dealers. This was a promo before the actual ASCMcLaren Capri production line was set up and approved by Mecury Division. The ASCMcLaren factory was in southern Livonia. A few years later, my brother worked for them converting Capris into the 2 seat convertible. In the late 80s/early 90s I purchased the side skirts and rear valance for my car through Hines Park L-M. The rear valance was the wrong part that was designed for the rounded Mustang rear bumper. A couple of years ago, I purchased the correct rear valance from ASCMcLaren Parts & Service in Florida. I hope this answers your question.

Regards,

Jerry

AHA! Excellent answer! And VERY believable now that you give all the details!

I would like to invite you over to the "official" ascMcLaren forums at my site and if you could, maybe toss up a hello (http://group.ascmclarencoupe.com). They would be very interested in hearing any stories you have and anything your brother knows too! I imagine you may already know the moderator of the forums "Sandy Block" who runs the asc registry!

A few years later, my brother worked for them converting Capris into the 2 seat convertible.

Did your brother work on any COUPES too?

:tu:

Saleen used a three piece front air damb that was almost identical to the pace car/cobra front piece. The early 84/85 car's used the stock rear bubper cover with these little spat's placed on the rear bumper that where really similar to the svo one's.

My vote is for the Saleen rear bumper and side skirt's.

What i saw, was the 82 GT with the original front end, but the Saleen Side skirts and rear valance with turn down exhaust. It was REALLY nice! Also had a 302 crate engine in it 8)
