ok guys, finally found me a 351w for my capri. its sitting in an 82 van. the dude wants 400 bucks for it, i have yet to hear it run, he said that it starts right up, but dont worry i will hear it run or will pay less. anyways, sitting in my backyard I have an 86 351w HO (can you say, "cop engine"!!!) that gave up a while back, anyways that gives me a set of e6te heads and 4bbl intake. i also have a set of e7's if the e6's are no good. i was fixin on bumping the compression up from 8.3ish to the 9.5-10.0 range. i figured that since i did this it might be a good idea for bearings too. should i bother or just plop on the top end and call it good? i really dont have the cash for a complete overhaul. mostly cause it will get spent on a 5 gear swap. also, it really doesn't need to last but 20,000 or so miles. if even that

IMHO, forget about the E6's and go with the E7's and the 4v intake. You could even keep the '82 heads and just do the intake swap. I would even consider trying to find a set 0f C9 0r D0 Windsor heads, if you can score them cheap enough, clean 'em up and slap them on and you will have a nice street engine.

$400 sounds a little steep to me, unless it is an engine that you can just bolt in and go. If so I agree, slap the 4V intake on it and be done. If it need a re-ring, I'm thinking like $100-$200 as a core.

yeah, supposably all it needs is a battery and it will start right up.

are 302 and 351 distributors interchangeable?

No they aren't. The Windsor dizzy is longer than the 302.

302 E-7 heads wont just bolt straight on because the head bolts are 7/16" and 351's are 1/2". Unless you have some 351 E-7's.

Well, I think you can use the 351W distributor in a 302 HO, as the firing orders will be the same and the distributor will just stick up a little higher.

Or a drill.

I know nothing about 86 TRUCK heads, (guys, there is a T in there, no S), but if they are a one year item.....

The 351 dist. the shaft is longer and the oil pump shaft is bigger will not work at all.

This I'll have to look in to. I have one of each kicking around somewhere. I'll have to compare them to each other. I had heard you can use a 351W distributor in a 302HO, but never actually tried it or knew anyone that did. Could be BS, I don't know.

If i were you? I'd rebuild what's sitting in the backyard. Odds are the motor in the van needs a rebuild even if it runs "good" for now. Tearing a motor down, new bearings, rering'in it, & checking all clearances garuantee's a solid performer for many years to come....

Many times I've seen "fresh heads" installed on a worn motor only to see said motor now draw oil past the weak rings & blow smoke out the exhaust. It happened to me, (I'm ashamed to admit), on my first "budget kinda rebuild".... Never, never, never to happen again i might add....;)

If the van is an E359, the block is much stronger.

how can i tell if its a 359? it says 350 on the sides, but i dont think that they would have emblemss for so few.

all i know is that it has the HO, c6, and 4.10s it also holds like 7 quarts of oil!

The distributors are NOT interchangeable. The 351 utilizes a larger diameter, so I will not fit in a 302 block whatsoever.
