I wanting to swap my C-4 for a T5 and my buddy has one from his old turbo coupe(87 I think), that was freshly rebuilt before he blew it up, can this be swapped? are they the same as V-8 ones or weaker?
I thought there was something different about these, maybe input shaft length or something.

Thanks, Todd

The input shaft requires a different pilot bearing as the 2.3 shaft is smaller. Also, with the gearing in it, you'll likely break it with a 302. I don't really think you'll like the gearing in it anyway, first gear will be extremely short.

I'm in the same boat.. My stock T-5 is trashed and my backup is an SVO trans.

The input shaft is something like 1/4" longer..
It also has a different pilot bushing size..

Some will say you can use a TC or SVO pilot bearing.. this is wrong..
they only have an OD of 0.827
The stock 5.0 pilot bearing has an OD of 1.45 and a bore of 0.671

I've heard the trick is to use a 84 Ranger 2.2l Diesel pilot bearing.
Timken PN 202-SS or Motormite 14672

Now I have a few problems with this fix..

While the bore size is correct a 0.590 the OD is only 1.378"
it's a loose fit by 0.072".. That more than 1/16"
The tolerance on the stock bearing is .006

I'm willing to bet this is one of the reasons the 2.3 T-5's don't last behind a 5.0

I have an idea for making a bushing that would allow the use of a 2.3T bearing but I don't have a lathe at the moment..

I've been thinking of just swapping to a 5.0 input shaft.

Thanks guys, I tought something was different, great details too, sounds like it might be easier to go find a 302 T5 with bell housing to make things easy.

The Tcoupe T5's were rated for around 300 HP, it should work fine with your 302. On my brothers camaro, we run a 2.8 T5 with his 305... We simply changed the bellhousing (used a 305 bellhousing) and ran the smaller clutch... Man it goes alot quicker in 1st and 2nd!!
I say go for it.. it's not that hard of a swap.

It seems you arn't the only one having a hard telling turbo coupe 5-speed torque capacities....

Here's a list of specs for the Ford T-5's

http://www.moderndriveline.com/Technical_Bits/transmission_spec.htm

The TC/SVO's were 235-250 ft/lb depending on year..

Stock 5.0 for 85 was good for 265 ft/lb

I used one on my 82GT before, I have the napa bushing part number at home if you need it. My car had 3.55 gears in the rear and with that trans it was just too short in 1st gear, I mean stupidly redlined quickly. It held up fine. The car had about 270 torque at the time.

Basically, don't go by the power rating for your choice. Go by the gearing. Because...well...the T5 sucks regardless.

The T5 I'm putting in has a 4.01 first gear.
my stocker T5 has 3.35..
With the 2.73 rear in the car switching to the SVO t5 will be like swapping to 3.23 gears.

This is all temporary untill I can get the Stock T5 rebuilt..

The taller the rear gear, the more it puts the stress on the tranny.

As far as everone always saying the 2.3 tranny is weak, dont tell a 2.3 turbo owner. LOL!

I look at it this way. If you break V8 T5's, then you will break 2.3 T5's too.

That T5 was broken long before I got my hands on it.
I agree your your coments on the stress on the 2.3 T5..
I'm only using it so I can drive it while I'm rebuilding the old one.

I don't plan on doing anything but normal driving with the SVO trans in the car.. Plus I'll make some SVO owner a good deal when it comes back out.
