Power Steering?

I have a 1986 LX that was orginally a 3.8. Is the power steering rack and pinion the ford design or TRW design? I need to replace it and they both cost the same. What one am I better of using? Are they interchangeable? Would a SVO rack be better?

As far as I know...the rack should match the power steering pump.

Was the power steering pump originally hooked up to a car with a Sport Steering Rack (2.5 turns lock to lock)? I forget the years but I think it was 83 where all V8s got the quick ratio steering....somebody may correct me on this.

If so, then you can get the quick ratio rack. If the pump is from a car that did not have it...then I think you can get either style rack as long as it is 3 turns lock to lock.

Mismatching pumps and racks can potentially lock your steering up.
