Hi there, I'm a newbie with a 1985 Mustang. My T5 grinds into 2nd, and I'd like to have it rebuilt!

Does anyone have any recommendations?!

I did a search and came up with Capri50H.O.

BUT, the shop he used in San Bernadino wants $265 labor + $250 parts?? He said he was in and out the door spending $175 !!!

Any other ideas?

you can always try and DIY it. I'be heard great things about this guy and there is even a video to show you exactly how to do it.

Hmmm.... i'm not intersted in DIY'ing it, too much time there. Plus, I'm hard on my trannies.

Thanks for the tip tho! I will definitely keep that website saved in case I need to pickup a rebuild kit for my guy!

Glen at Brother's Performance in Corona build's lot's of T5's for $600.00 + you're old core T5. So, I'd say the price you were quoted isn't far off at all......

Orange County Gear in Garbage Grove is a place that is pretty recommended by a lot of the guys on SCHP

I had mine rebuilt 2yrs ago payed $900. replaced front snout with steel one and all gears as one had chip in and mess all rest up also 1 shaft. did in a week. He holds record for fastest t-5 shift car. He was the cheapest one I found everybody else wanted more then what a new trans cost to rebuild it. ship it to him drained of all fluid and insure for cost of new one he will do what ever you want as far as upgrading great to deal with would go to him with out hesitation. Hanlon Motorsports 610-469-2695 he's on the East Coast but worth it. good luck heres link to website

Well it's up to you. You can't go wrong with either. I've heard absolutely nothing but good stuff about OC Gear. It's local, he does good work, you don't have to ship it out anywhere. You could always pick up the hanlon rebuild kit and the video and rebuild it yourself.

I think I'm going to have my friend Ron do them for me. I have 5-6 trannies that i've broken laying around that I need fixed.

Could get expensive at 300 a pop!

Rebuilding a t5 is something I've wanted to learn. I've been keeping my eye out for a busted one, so I can learn to rebuild them.

Me too. If for nothing else just to make some money off selling it. But the only ones I can find are super trashed and not even worth rebuilding.

There's nothing to doing it yourself, I used a Ford shop manual and a Hanlon rebuild kit, and I had mine out of the car, rebuilt, and back in the car in a weekend. I'd never done it before and it worked as good as the one I had rebuilt for $850 (parts only cost me $250).

Unfortunately, to do it properly, I'd need snap ring pliers, and a hydraulic press--neither of which I own.

My buddy is gonna do it down in Costa Mesa for $125 + parts. I hope he clears his schedule cause I got a pallet full of trannies for him! lol

Theres this guy by the screen-name LPGTURBO on here, but I've seen him more on Socalhorsepower.com. He works in Whittier and seems to do a good job by others' accounts.

Mine grinds into 2nd gear occasionally too. It doesn't do that if I double-clutch it. Have you tried doing that, and seeing if that makes teh problem go away?

if you are hard on trannies u should buy a new one. most people rebuild trannies or give you one for around $600 thats only around $400 dollars of a diffrence from a new tko i have seen in 50resto. or just rebuild yours and be nice to it.
