Ok guys I am new to this forum, however I'm not new the the Mustang. I just had a question I hoped you guys could answer for me. Here goes: I have a red 1986 Ford Mustang LX 5.0 Notchback. I picked up the car from someone that moved outta state and wanted it SOLD asap and asked his reletives to sell it for him, quite honestly I think I got a steal. This mustang is completely stock and only has 18,000 original miles, THAT RIGHT only 18,000 original miles. The interior still has new car smell to it and the tires are even still the stock tires it rolled on in 1986. Anyway I picked it up, flushed all fluids, got a new battery and it fired right up. I drove it all this last summer "it only had 17,200 on it when I bought it" Now I have been told that it is quite rare and I should not drive it anymore. It is back in storage in a heated garage under the car cover. I'm only 21 but I do have other cars to drive instead. My Q is, do you think that I should sell it to a collector or something like that? Im at a time in my life that I would rather just drive my cars and I feel bad driving this one with such low milage. So, should I keep it or sell it? Also how much should I expect to get for it if I decide to sell. If you need any more info on the care to help you determine its value let me know. I appreciate any help you guys could give me and I'm glad to be on the forums :D

Okay, the thing with these cars, is that there is just a very small market for them.. If you want to sell it, only expect a couple grand out of it, if that... The only way you'll be getting more than that is if you find someone who is uber into these cars. If it were me, I'd drive the piss out of it, then again I'm an 18 year old with a lead foot... Anyways bottom line is, yes they are realativly rare, but finding someone who truly appreciates that will be a tough job, if you're expecting big bucks...sorry to shatter your dreams.. IMO It would just be the far better choice to drive it :)

I guess you didn't catch the "18k mile" part of his description. When's the last time you saw a 5.0 NOTCHBACK with 18k miles? Any of the low mileage garage queens have been GTs....and currently the notchbacks have become MORE popular....but there are NO low mileage 5.0 examples left. Not to mention its an 86 which is becoming MORE desirable for the EFI switchover than 85 witch was the last year of the carbed motors.
He's going to get FAR more money than "a few grand" for an 18k mile car. Cars like that will fetch $10k if the car has been garaged and pampered for those 18k miles and looks factory new. IF it has been beat on and left outside...well then its going to be worth far less of course.
These cars are extremely rare in that kind of condition. A little bit of wear and tear and the value drops FAST.
Garage queen cars aren't much fun either in my opinion but if you have the means to limit the mileage on it to like 3k or less a year then you are in a position to really have something special down the road. In ten years it will still have less than 50k miles on it...which for a 30 year car is still going to be extremely low.
Oh yeah, PICTURES! I WANNA SEE PICTURES!
-Mike
I say keep it and enjoy it as a weekend driver... but baby the hell out of it to the point of being VERY anal about babying it!
Yes... and post pictures!

Do what I do. just have more vehicals to drive and in turn non of them get many miles on them. Keep it for a nest egg. Someday you might want to tighe the knot and swing the new house with the huge 6 car garage and the 80'x100' pole shead. Having a car like that is money in the bank.

I appreciate the replies. I'm sorry I dont have a digital camera to take pics of it for you, but the car looks just like it would if you walked into a dealer showroom to look at in back in 1986. The car really is perfect. So you are guessing around $10,000?

Well, if it is BRAND NEW like you say...*I* would start at $10k. But its tough to say as there are none in that condition left to compare value to.
I mean, I haven't seen an 86 5.0 Notch with 18k miles on it....nobody back then would have ever thought to put a notch away...you either speculated your money on an SVO or a GT....and those are getting ~$10k for super low mileage examples.
I am aware though that it's quite possible that the "collector" market may not yet view ANY "LX", no matter how rare or low mileage as a valuable car.
Here's the kicker....does it have TTops? Or sunroof? If it has TTops...then you have the holy grail of Notchbacks....the only one better would be an 18k mile Cop Car notch.
Also, go BUG a FRIEND or NEIGHBOR for a digital camera! You MUST know somebody who can take some pics! I REALLY want to see some pictures!

well im heading back home this weekend, i'll try and dig one up for ya. Sorry, no t-tops or sunroof. But as far as condition, its showroom, no other way to put it. Im glad my dad stumbled upon this for me last year. I might keep it, but i really want a house at this point and it would be an excellent down payment. Thanx again!

I think you could easily get 10k for it on ebay this week. An 85 Capri w/ 22k had a bid $8700, and the sad truth is, the mustangs will always fetch more than a capri. Also saw a clean 86GT hatck with 36k close at near $8,000.
There are plenty of people out there seeking low mileage examples on ebay. This would be an instant hit. Last year of the four eye, first year of the EFI, low miles.
I agree with the others, if you can keep the miles low, you can still enjoy it during nice weather, keep it in the garage, and have a small goldmine on your hands when the collectors get going in 10 years from now.
Anyway, you have plenty of options are your disposal.

Well, I got some pics, however I dont know how to load them up on here or how to host them...I need better ones anyway, I had my freind take some shots and he only got one interior shot, one of the mileage, one of the engine, and 2 from the rear. I'll get more whole car shots next week. Will anyone put the pics up for me if I email them to you?

The outside and from what I can see, the inside looks great...just need a small bit of detailing.
But for the low miles, that engine compartment is atrocious. A good detailing and cleaning would improve the value of the car. You would also need to put the engine bay back to 100% stock to get top $$.....in effect yank that blue wire.

What I would do is douse the engine bay with simple green and clean with a toothbrush.
For the rust, get this product from Kleen Strip called something like "rust remover". Its amazing stuff and it turns rust back to original metal (I bought it on a whim and was extremely amazed). To keep it from rusting again, get a tub of vasaline and go to town, wiping it on any bare metal areas.
I assume since the files you sent were labels "Ebay.jpg", you'e planning on selling it. Get the car detailed or your going to get alot of questions as to why its not "perfect".

Yah, I was gonna throw it up on Ebay. Do you think that putting it in Mustang Trader, or AutoTrader would be better than Ebay? And are you talking about rust in the engine bay? I dont have rust on any of the car including the undercarrage. One more quick Q, I left the aftermarket CD player in there, but I still have the original radio in a box in the trunk. Should I put the original back in it 1st too?

Yes, put the original radio in. Put it back to 100% original if you want the best price. NO MODS. No aftermarket mudflaps, radios, speakers, shifter handles, no nothing. It is a good idea that you get a FORD oil filter and AIR FILTER too....and you should get a FORD battery if it doesn't have one anymore. Go over the car with a fine toothed comb....have the shocks been replaced? Are they Ford? Are those tires the same as what the car was delivered with?
The closer you get to how the car rolled of the assembly line, the quicker the value escalates. Any TINY thing out of place and a true collector will red flag it....and collectors want 100% all original cars that don't need ANYTHING done to them to bring them back to stock trim.
The rust I was refering to was the surface rust on the engine parts.

Were 10 holes available for any mustang in 86 or just G.T.'s ?

Yeah LX cars got chrome trim....I think the door handles were part of it. It was for the GS/RS Capris in 86.
As far as 10 holes go...
http://www.ascmclarencoupe.com/Literature/DealerOnly/85_Ford_ProductFactsBook_14.jpg
In 1985 they were required for the LX with 5.0...at least that's what the book says.

The 10-holes and Chrome handles are original. The only things I've done to the car that made it different from the way it was, was adding the aftermarket CD player. The subs are gone now, and all the rest of the speakers are still stock. I have a fram oil filter on it now, and the tires on it are Goodyear Eagle GT+4. I dunno if those are the originals or not.

(*I* think your crazy to let it go and *I* would hang onto it and baby the hell out of it...cause the prices are going up)
Well, if you really don't want to keep it you could do what alot of people do and put it on ebay with a rediculous reserve and see who shakes out of the wood work.
$6-8k would be my "guess" (clean that engine bay and it will go substantially higher)...but who knows...notches are popular....but are they popular among the collectors who have the money you want?

ah Ic. All I know is that the GT+4 are a nightmare to drive on rain. Luckily I dont have to drive it anymore, my Explorer is the winter car, and my SHO takes care of me on the warmer months. I'll take your advise and get that engine bay cleaned up and shining. I'll get the CD player outta there too and put the original radio back in. We'll see what happens. Everytime I go to take pics of it, I doubt my decision to sell and I kinda wanna keep it, but I need a house. I dont want to rent anymore when I could be paying the monthly bill to own the property. Does anyone here know of someone that may be interested in it? I would prefer it to go to someone that loves the cars and would baby the heck outta it, but with me only being 21 I dont think thats something I could do... anymore opinions on the car are more than welcome. You guys have been very helpful and its appreciated.

Watch this auction and see what this car gets:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4537221082&category=6236
It is a stock example...not low mileage but worth watching as it is nearly identical to your car.

In 1983 I walked into a ford delership and I told them i was looking for a Charchol grey GT. They said they had one coming in. It came in loaded T-Roofs etc( not what i wanted) but made the deal anyway. Fast forward 21 years. The car is sitting in the rear of my garage coverd with 26,000miles on her. I just never had the need to sell her ( came close ) My point is if you Love this car keep it,use it sparingly in nice weather, but do not expect it to become some 50.000 dollar car. It will however draw attention in years to come, and you will be proud of the fact you kept her.. Just my 2 cents from an old guy

Here's my point of view...
Yes, it is a beautifull car and yes, I would keep it BUT: in thinking in terms of reality and your willingness to sell her to gain a home, I admire that and it's not like you would be blowing the money :) Keeping the car would mean being very carefull with her, spoiling it and watching it's ever move and if you are not willing to baby it then it's not worth it to you as much as it would be to someone elese.
If you do sell it, I would ask a ridicoulous reserve just to see what happens. That way, you're not obligated of selling her. If you see you get a bid of almost 25-30 grand then hell yeah, put her up for real :) That's what it would take for me to sell her but even then, it would be a very hard decision for me. Look, I'm 21 and my capri is nowhere near the shape your beauty is, yet, I treat that thing like my wife and constantly worry about someone scratching it even though it's got a crappy paintjob :) I was thinking about selling it but I don't think I could, LOL :P It makes me feel special knowing I have somthing that's rare. If Mike was telling me what he's telling you, I would have to keep her just knowing how rare it is...I'm greedy and wouldn't want anyone else owning it.
I don't blame you for wanting to get out and own a home and if that's your first priority then I say sell it. But if you have enough money to buy a house then keep the car and put it in your garage then sit back and admire both your treasures 8)
Good luck man,
Rocko

I want to keep it, but right now I'm renting and every time I pay the rent I think to myslef...."gee I could be using this money to pay on a house ill someday own, instead of giving it to the renter" Can anyone think of a person that may be interested in a car like this?

Yeah...a house comes first...hands down. Cars are not an investment. They do not outperform the stockmarket or real estate.
Get a house while rates are still fairly low. They are going to go up!

Wow, I just posted my car on another stang forum to gather opinions about it, and someone told me this! "From the pictures you have prvided, it looks like your stang is the color Jalapeno Red. According to the production figures published in the May 2005 issue of MM&FF, only 284 Jalapeno Red 5.0 LX sedans were produced in 1986." Is there any truth to that?

the car looks very nice, but I too was a little surprised at the appearance of the engine bay. it looks like alot more miles than 18k. Did it sit outside for a while?
Mike is right, the judgement will come from all aspects of the car, inside, outside and engine bay for top dollar. If you can't get at least 10k for it, I would try keep it until the market for these matures some.
btw, what is the dealer ad on the trunk? McCafferty Langhorne, or Mechanicsburg? (or neither?)
