84 GT Factory Blackout Treatment

THinking of getting my '84's exterior to factory finish. But i'm curious to know if the hood treatment (Blackout) was paint or decal, like the 85/86. Also, what else did the '84 GT have that included black lettering, cause I thing there was decal on the fenders and hatch...but not too sure.

The hood was painted, and depending on your paint color, the stripes that wrap around it will be different colors (they are a decal). My black car has silver stripes around the hood (see my album), and a silver GT decal on the hood, fenders, and hatch. Black I believe is the only car to get the silver decals, with possibly the exception of the dark charcoal metallic cars (I owned one of them, but it had already been repainted without the graphics). The hood decal on any other color car was the same as body color, and all other colors got black decals on the fenders and hatch. As far as how the hood stripes were made, I'm really not sure. I matched mine up at the local Advance, but I ended up using two different pieces of striping tape, and I believe the factory stripe was one piece, in black with a body colored pinstripe maybe?

MY GT is white, with the hood painted black. The hood howerver was painted all the way to the bottom and it also covered up the GT decal at the edge of the hood, cause if you look at the paint, you can see/feel the GT decal under the black paint. I also have the GT painted on the fenders but not decal. Also, the pinstripe is white with a black line in the middle, so i think I can find that at the local autoparts.

Just want to make sure I get it close to OE (atleast looking close).

I thought the pinstripe might have been mostly body color, I looked at a silver one one time, and the stripe appeared to be silver with a 1/8" black pinstripe, but that was some time ago.

The GT emblem on the hood of your white stand should be white. the GT in the side modling infront of the rear tires should be silver, the GT on the deck lid should be black. I have left the hood decal off of mine. I however have the truck lid decal and well the side modlings have the GT modled in and I repainted it silver again after I painted the side moldings to freshen them up.

84's don't have the GT in the side molding, his white car should have black GT decals over the 5.0 badges. The GT molding was an 85-86 only part.

hmm i will have to check into that. My car is definately an 84 but my uncle converted it over to an 86 front nose cone in 87 soi will see if he changed the side moldings as well.
