Hey all, I just finished repairing my door handle for my 81. It hit -45C last week here so when I pulled the door handle it busted the cheap plastic gears in the handle itself a bit.

I still have to replace the handle completely in order to make sure this does not happen in the future. I am going back outside now to put the handle back in and the door back together. I will be taking my camera to show what needs to be done if anyone has this problem in the future. (wether its just cold out or its just a busted door handle).

Above is a link directly to the project I did today.

1. Use phillip screwdriver to remove the screw holding the door handle plate.
2. Remove Door handle plate. (1 screw)
3. Use clip removal tool too pull back the door cover plate back from the door itself.
4. Remove Door handle with Phillips. (1 screw)
5. Remove Door Handle with Phillips. (3 Screws)
6. Remove Mirror Cover Plate with Phillips. (1 Screw)
7. Push up on free hanging door cover plate and it will come off.
8. Remove Door handle with Phillips. (1 screw) - It is also holding onto a push rod for the door, detach from that.
9. With the door handle removed check the push rod hinge to make sure it has all the gear teeth in place and a full range of motion. If it does not you will have to replace it. If its not the handle you will have to look through the holes in the door too see if any of the push rods have been disconected, if so, connect them (replace any broken clips). Once you have fixed the problem with the door. Procede with step 8 and work backwards. It took me 15 minutes including rebuilding my handle with a new geard push rod hinge.

GOOD LUCK!
