View Full Version : GT getting dyno'd today!
Well all, I'm having the GT dydo'd today. I can't wait to find out what the car is putting out to the rear with the mods the previous owner had done.
The previous owner had:
Swapped in an 86+ true dual exhaust system
Dynomax super turbo cat back
and E7 heads... with a little work done to them.
He said he wouldn't be suprized if it puts out 230 rwhp. I feel it'll put out around 215 rwhp though.
What do you all think it'll put out? anybody wanna have a little fun and make a good guess? BTW: the GT has a T5 and a 8.8" rear with 3.73's.
I'll have one run done at 4400 rpm and another at 5K rpm... the third run... I don't know.
So basically... I'm hoping for at least 215 rwhp... if it's more... then thats cool!

How can you have a run done at different RPM? I've always run the car to redline each time. You'll get a printout with your HP and torque graph on it. I can see yours putting out 220 or so, I'll be interested to see what yours puts out, namely how much difference the true dual exhaust made

I hope you reach your goal. ;) I can't wait until I bring mine to the dyno. Hopefully it'll be in March. Let us know how you made out. ;)

You will probally throw out around 210hp.
I can't wait until I get my car done in about a year to see what I'm going to throw out, going to be in the upwards of 500 :D

It is redline... I just didn't know what to expect... Never really done a dyno before.
I will post the results in my Album soon
The last run ended up being:
3rd run:
187.09 Max HP @ 4400 rmp
255.26 Max Torque @ 3300 rpm
Max speed: 96.12 mph
I'm not disapointed... I'm happy with it.... it IS a mostly stock Mustang after all. This is RWH that is listed of corse. The hp at the fly would be around 220 hp.
The guy that ran it had said the car runs real smoothe. He really doesn't get the carbed Mustangs in often specially ones that are mostly original.

If you want to see the results... goto my cardomain site and scroll down to the picture of the dyno sheet the click!

Not bad. My old CFI setup car pulled 175 at the wheels with a roller longblock, so 185 with your stock 85 carb stuff ain't bad at all.
The guy that ran the car on the dyno said that the car probably felt like it have more HP due to the rear end gearing.
All I can say is that the car is fast.

Hey, it's good numbers for an almost stock Mustang. I always wonder what my set-up would pull: dual exhaust, no cats, Edelbrock Performer 289 intake and an Edelbrock carb.
I've found that shop guys always really respect the fact that we're still running a carbureted engine. While it's my 55 year-old mechanic Larry or the 30 year-old guy at the lube shop. You get a certain pride about being 'old-school'.

And what even more cool about these carb'd cars is that we can toss a stroker in there and not have to change a chip... cuse theres no computers. Hell, I the stock holley should work fine for a 347 stroker... or at leas trhw one I was planing on tossing in my Futura before it was wrecked. I'm not thinking of doing the stroker to the 85 GT but with a slightly mild cam to keep it smog legal.

that is pretty good for a relatively stock motor.
I remember the first time we dyno'd the new s-trim 331 I built last year, it only put down ~300rwhp, so I thought for sure something was wrong. Then we looked closer, and realized we were blowing the tires off the roller! there was rubber everywhere.
locked it down a few notches, bingo. 503 rwhp on the 2nd pull. Let me tell you the ride home from that tuning session was a lot of fun.
the best part is, we did it on pump gas and conservative timing. In the spring I might get nuts with some more boost and water injection. This is no doubt some kind of sickness. :)
edit: Marz, my 84 used to be carb'd, but I converted to EFI many years ago. You don't have to rely on chips to tune EEC-IV computers. I use the Anderson PMS. it's a piggyback system that interfaces with the existing programming. I can make changes from a small handheld device that sits inside the car. It stores up to 3 completely different programs based on pump gas, race fuel, etc. It's simple to learn, and great for making any changes needed based on peformance upgrades.

where did you dyno it and how much did it cost?

http://www.swansonperformance.com Will give you a details. He charged me 100 bux for three runs. I really didn't like the price... but I know he doesn't BS and I wanted it done and didn't want to search around.

wow, that is cheap for three runs! Danny Swanson is a well respected EFI tuner for many years now. Your lucky you have an expert there. Some dyno op's are like a chop shop, get 'em in, get 'em out asap.

Theres a dyno in northern NJ that does 4 pulls for $40. These guys are good as a bunch of friends of mine always go up there every month.

Hmm, Ok. I know he's a good guy and he knows his stuff. But I had no idea that price was cheap... I've never known about anybody else to compare to.
Cool, So I feel better now.

4 pulls for $40. Thats a fantastic price. Here in town on a dyno day its 3 pulls for $50. And you cant really make any adjustments that take too much time.

It's Steve (I believe his name was) from TTP. If you want more information, I can get some from a friend of mine who goes.

If you want to get info right away, go to http://www.controlledinsanity.net
Then go to the first forum and looking for a thread named dyno day. The guy that dynos the cars is actually on that forum.

the HP seems spot on, but the torque just seems low to me.
my coupe made 285 ft-lbs....

yeah, I was wondering about that...
Would rear end gearing have anything to do with it? It has 3.73's in it.

newp. Its weird to me especially since yours is a roller motor. My COupe had a flat tappet 8.2:1 motor. Does your car have cats?

Yes, it has a stock 86 GT h-pipe with the four cats... minus one dead gutted cat. I live in cali so I need to keep the cats. Yeah, it's an 85 GT with 86 True duals.
But, wouldn't there be a loss of Torque like there was HP? The hp was a 15% loss... which the dyno guy calculated out to 220 Flywheelhp. Would the same be said for the torque... or does than not aply?

it would sort of, it would just occur higher in the RPM range.
I wish I still had the Coupes dyno sheet around. My car had a mufflershop made catless H pipe and a dynomax 2.5" catback, so theres some HP in my favor, I had stock headers and a performer 289 intake with a Holley 4160 600cfm 4bbl. I'd guess you'd lose some low end to air flow with exhaust, but you'd pick up midrange hp and torque.
