That post just hurt my head... Aren't there just screws holding the rack on??? If not, drill out fasteners and have fun filling the holes ect, and repainting the deck lid..

Reach over and press the CAPS LOCK key once, please.
If yours is like my 89, they are riveted on. You must carefully drill the rivet head, then the racks come off. I had several rivet bodies stay in the deck lid. I carefully got them out as well.
I used the proper size rivets to reattach.

You go to the junkyard looking for '79-93 Mustang 'notch trunk lids or the "lids" on early 'verts in the '84-'85 range that do not have the luggage racks. You carefully remove your lid, take some good measurements to drill the 6ea holes properly into the notch lid, swap the lock & key assembly, & bolt the smooth lid onto your car.
Filling the holes is too time consuming to do properly. And usually, after the paint has aged about a year; the bodywork starts to become visible & you won't be happy. Remember; the sun beats down on the lid pretty hard & shutting the trunk lid will pop bondo eventually since it is very thin sheetmetal.
Either a pro does the work or get a smooth lid from the yard period.

Tony, it sounds like he is putting the luggage rack back on.
84 CVT, drill out the rivets and reattach with rivets. If you are not reattaching the rack, find another deck lid. What is the matter with the lid? Just prepping for a repaint?
I'm not too far from you.

Whoops! Is it Monday morning?;)
If you need to find the proper factory type pop rivets; Independently owned NAPA stores usually have them in stock or can get them for you.
hell, I hope I finally contributed something wothwhile with out misunderstanding\misreading the question......

Tony, excellent advise on why not to try to fill those holes.

how big are the holes? couldn't u just weld em in and grind off the excess and lightly skim it with some "icing" and prime and paint...but getting a new smooth lid would be more time efficient

For the price of a decklid, all of that work, time, and money is not practical.

tru tru...was just an idea tho just incase he wasn't able to get one fairly cost effectively is all... i guess i'm just the kind of person that's always ended up doing things the hard way lol...but i learn from them tho

Thanks for all the info guys.Sorry about the caps. It is a lid from the yard to replace the rusted 1 on my 84 vert. I need to paint it the proper color & thought it would be easyer to do with the rack (nice rack) off. You guys sure like giving input. THANKS AGAIN. sorry.
