i found a 4 eye 5.0 car with damage. the lip under the top of the hatch is rotted out as well as the body behind the sail panel, the floors need to be replaced, the drivers door is rusted under the trim and along the bottom edge, and it needs fenders and a hood. is this car saveable? the price is pretty good for a running car.

How rotted? Enough to put your hand through or surface rust?
It sounds saveable to the point of a daily driver....but it almost sounds like a close call....as rust is usually in more places that you can't see. Can you supply pictures?

"savable" is a very broad concept. Almost any car can be saved, given enough time and money. The question is, is it worth it. I remember reading in a classic car magazine about a '57 chevy that was restored. The car had been sitting in a field for so long that a good-sized tree had grown up through the engine bay and had to be cut down in order to move the car. That car was an original '57 Bel-Air convertible 283ci 283hp fuel injected four-speed car originally painted red and white. At least I think it was a four-speed. Anyway, it was the most desireable and valuable '57 Chevy you could have bought new back in '57. After they cut down the tree and hauled away the rusting relic, it was completely restored to show quality.
With the kind of rust you are talking about, it basically sounds like a parts car. Yeah, it could be fixed, but you are better off looking for a rust-free car. You will be time and money ahead starting with a rust-free example.

If I had a bigger shop and the correct welder etc etc I would prob tackle a job like that. But the car would have to be basicly free or a rare car.
Hopefully within the next 2-3 year's the wife and I will be able to buy something outside of town that has a little bit of land. Then I can build my big shop and start collecting some of these poor four eye car's.

That would be up to the Admin's.
Take a bunch of picture's showing the nasty rust and show it to them.
IMHO yes. But Skye is the boss and it is her site so PLEASE check with her before you do anything.

Jeremy (V8 Only) had a car that caused a major issue here, it was hit, BAD, and the floor was bucked, the quarter panel needed replacement, and the tail lamp panelwas bent beyond repair. It was tweeked so bad that I knew from one picture that the car needed over $10,000 of work to fix and paint it (I spent $7500 putting my 86 back together with a lot less damage). Unfortuatly, what I think is a parts car is not the same as what others think, and some people (those from the rust belt) think that a parts car is one that has one fender that is NOT rusted away.

Yeah, I thought the debate over that car was pointless. I took one look at the photo as was like "are you freaking kidding me". That car was HAMMERED - DONE - STICK A FORK IN IT!

You can buy and part it out. The only question is if you can do it here.
Unfortunatly that is all some cars are good for. The "crime" in when they are fixable or rare.
My .02
J.
I say buy it if its a good deal, mabey a few hundred (but thats on my local economy) because it runs. The worst thing you have a is a parts car for a good chasi that has a cracked block or get a 4banger and drop in the 5.0, trans, and the pedals if need be.
If you want to fix it just _cut away_ all the rust, look at whats left . If you have sheet left to weld to go for it - or just use it for a tool shed untill you can find a better chasi
------------------------------
That said - for all that trouble you could probaly just find a better 5.0 car.

The issue was over the lack of pictures more than anything. We did not get a complete view of the car until the big drama happened. That's why, from now on, nothing will be posted as parting out without having VERY clear pictures in the initial post. But let's not start that all over again.
There is no black and white on what a worthwhile save is or isn't. Heaven forbid, judgment of some sort must be exercised. And that's where people get all pissed off because there is no way that everyone will agree on everything all the time. Such is life.
Post up pics if you can, but it sounds like a goner to me.
