Hey guys I have a question about hooking up the heater hoses.. My 79 pace car w/ 302 had a fire under hood from previous owner.. Ok When I got the car the heater core was bypassed. I hooked it back up the way I thought it should be & heater BARELY gets warm. I mean Barely ! I left out the alum restrictor that goes in-line.. Could this be why it barely gets warm ? Which line does restrictor go in ? I have a right & left on heater core hoses & intake & water pump on other end. Does it matter what goes where ? ANY Help greatly appreciated THANKS

It matters very much where you hook the hoses up or your cooling system won't work lol, I had this problem when I put my 302 in and it was a PITA took me about 10 times to get everything right, the it was to hot in the car, I'm looking at pictures of mine right now, and.. The left heater hose goes into The manifold, The right heater hose goes into the water pump (the furthest left one on the pump) and the small 90 degree hose (about 4 inch long) goes right beside the right heater hose from the water pump to the thermostat housing.. If my explaination is to confusing simply say the word and I'll post the picture. Also, maybe the heatercore was by passed for a reason? Maybe it was toast? Something to think about... Good Luck

Calon- THANKS ! sounds simple, Pics would be GREAT.. What about the alum restrictor tube ? Did you use this ? My core was by-passed because both heater hoses melted in underhood fire. I Removed the aluminum restrictor when I put the new hoses on Because I didnt know what it was & didnt figure it was needed. Thanks

To tell you the truth, I just used whatever hoses I could find that were long enough... I should probably go buy some new ones LOL Anyways, I dont think the restrictor would matter? If anything I would think it would make more heat... anyways I know my heater didnt work right when the hoses were on wrong... Here's 2 pictures (yes I kow my engine bay is horribly dirty and unorganised but the engines cming out tomorrow) The first is just an over view to see all the hoses.. The second is the small 90 degree hose and the right heater hose going into the water pump... Hope this helps a bit more. Calon

HUMMMM- Thats how mine is hooked up & your saying you just spliced 2 hoses together because you used old stuff you already had around (THERE IS NO RESTRICTION IN YOUR SET-UP or how you joined the 2 hoses??) Dough- I Feel stupid ! Just had a brain fart........... Maybe I could have a thermostat thats stuck open ? Now that I think about it the temp guage has been lower then it used to be>>>>>> ANYONE on the restrictor idea ? I know it had one originally because I saved it ! What was it for & which line did it go in ?

The restrictor is in there to restrict the flow going into the heater core. This reduces the pressure in the core and therefore helps it last longer. This also means that the core will take longer to get warm/hot.

Ok guys this aluminum restrictor tube was originally installed in one of the heater hoses JUST BEFORE They go thru firewall & into heater core. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE LOOK & TELL ME WHICH LINE ITS IN ?? Does it go in hose that connects to intake manifold OR Water pump ? ALSO Are U telling me the heater will Not get as hot w/ the restrictor ? Or am I misunderstanding ? THANKS

It's a restrictor, so it will do just that. It will restrict the flow, so that you will not get as much heat INSIDE the car, not the overall temp. Your engine will probably run cooler without the hose. IMO just store the restrictor somewhere for now, and keep the hoses as they are, you will get less heat inside the passenger compartment.

Do U mean restrictor= LESS HEAT ? So Thermostat is more then likeoly the problem?? THANKS Tony

Yes, restrictor as in less heat. Probably not the thermostat though, probably an old heater core that needs replacing..

The restrictor restricts the flow and therefore the pressure... not the temperature. Sure, it'll still get nice and warm in the cab... but it'll just take a while longer for it to get warm in the cab. The restrictor will reduce the pressure in the core... therefore making it last longer.

The restrictor will fit in the 3/4" line... which is the inlet.

I have a restrictor in all my V8 FOXes and have not had a problem with it. I changed the core in my 78 somewhere around 7 years ago... and added a restrictor in the inlet line. Still gets nice and toasty in that cab.

After rereading your post... the car mostlikey has a leaky core... Replace it, add the restrictor, and hook the line up correctly and you have it made.

A nice hot cab when you want it.

Jasen- No I dont have a bad core OR ATLEAST ITS NOT LEAKING.. Cant vouch for flow thru core tho. Do U have rest. in-line just before the core on your v-8 cars ALSO IS IT THE INNER OR OUTER HOSE ? Thanks

I had said in an earlier post that the restrictor goes in the heater core line that the 3/4" hose attaches too.... The the one that's closer to the drivers side. The restrictors I have slip into the larger of the two core lines poking out from the friewall.
