O.K., this IS 4-eye related.

Is this turbo the type I need as a direct replacement for the bad one in my '85 Cougar XR-7 (same as TurboCoupe)?

If it is the right one, what do you think of it?

Can anyone give me a realistic idea of what I should pay for one ranging from a good junkyard find to a completely rebuilt one? All I've been able to find are ones listed on different turbo rebuilder sites for anywhere between $350-$500. Ouch!

That would be it, but have you tried www.turboford.org? Used ones sometimes change hands for $75, and you can buy rebuild kits for them.

Thanks for the quick response!

I've previously checked out and registered at turboford.org. It looks like I need to start hanging out there.

I'm still in the process of leaning about the 2.3Ls and I'm kind of overwhelmed right now. I just want to get the turbo replaced on my XR-7 and get the darn thing running.

I agree. Right one.

But dont listen to that Super 60 crap. I doubt it. Seems to be popular recently to call them "super 60's" because the say .60 on the front. That lie right there could cause that turbo to cost way too much.

Buying a turbo is a crap shoot.

The smart thing to do (like me) is to buy a complete engine for 200 or less. Then part the engine out to get your money back. I usually end up with free turbo's.

Hit some of the local junkyards and price out an engine. DONT hit the big guys. Hit the **** hole looking places. Some will want a million bucks, but some will not care at all.

Yes, I agree 100% that that turbo is probably not a Super 60...probably can thank people like SSAutochrome for labeling every T3 they sell as a Super 60.

But you can make one if you buy a Grand National turbo and toss the compressor on.

I checked out that link. Cool stuff!
That managed to prove there are folks out there that clearly have a very high degree of automotive skill and more time to devote to their cars than I do.

You also have alternatives to the popular T3, you can get the smaller 1H1 series turbo found on the 87-88 turbocoupes or if you want bigger you can get (direct bolt on replacement of course) a HX35 off any Dodge Cummings turbo deisel truck.

If you have any questions about the 2.3L there are a few of us on here that know it quite well mechanically and know where too find good parts for upgrades.

I am working mine towards a goal of 400 horses. A friend at the local Merkur club has his 2.3L just dino'd over 500... so there is a lot of possibilities for this little sleeper engine while keeping your gas mileage :)

I need to learn a lot more about turbo charging the 2.3L. I'm starting to lurk more at turboford.org. Their FAQs are great and I'm making darn sure I search topics before I ask any questions. There seem to be a lot of experts there that aren't too tolerant of noob questions.

Although right now I'm just looking at getting my XR-7 running, 300-350 HP seems to be a very attainable goal while keeping the engine reliable and without going crazy upgrading the internals...at least from what I've read so far.

Neither of those are direct bolt on's.

Also, I think you mean the HY35W and not the HX which has the divided plenum.

No, he probably means the HX since people are still learning about the HY...the HY is better choice though, unless you want to run an pair of external gates or cut back the divider.

Hey Scott feel free to call me if/when you have any question's.

My goal for the SVO is to put 250-275 to the wheel's. I'm right at 200 at this point and the car was good for 15.0's at 6k feet at 94 mph. That's with all of the basic mod's and the only aftermarket part's being a fuel pump and a air filter.

My buddy can custom burn chip's and my car should see the dyno and a custom tune with in the next couple of month's. I'm hoping this will get me closer to my gaol because my single turbo 5.0 project (86 gt) is consuming most of my fund's and I'm not ready to buy a bigger turbo for the SVO yet.
