View Full Version : cowls....
Ok, I did a slavage yard run today and saw an 85 mustang LX 5spd 5L sitting next to a 82 LX and both had good looking cowls. Now, I know the 79-82 have the D9 PN'ed cowl and the 83+ have the E3 PN... and I've heard that they are different. But I removed both the 82's and the 85's and compared them and see no difference. I even tosse the D9 (the one from the 82 Mustang) and tossed it on the 85 Mustang and it fit right on w/o a problem.
Why was there a PN cheange? usually a PN change means something was changed on that part. As far has I can tell there is no difference between the D9 and E3 cowls.
Oh and funny thing... both of these cars were T-tops! Such a shame that 85 LX 5L 5 spd was in there... it looked fairly good.

I don't know what to say. They are vastly different. The older one ieven 2 pieces and the later one is one piece.

If the '82 had the one piece cowl then the front end was changed with the cowl.

The one I pulled off the 82 had a D9 Part number. It's D9ZB-6602228
Like I said... I'm a bit confused because of this. I didn't buy the one from the 85 cause it was kinda messed up... But it looked EXACTLY like the one off the 82. I spent a good 15 minutes comparing the two at the yard and the only difference I saw was the PN.
Like I said... I'm stumped...
The one from the 82 (the D9 PN) even fit right on the 85 mustang.

Were these both 2 piece cowls? Which did it look like the top or bottom?
The d9 part number is correct (matches perfectly) for the early style. Sounds like then the 85 was changed....or it wasn't an 85 you were looking at.
There were not two different hoods in 1985. That D9 cowl would NOT match up with the newer 85 hood. No way NO HOW. That car was changed at one point.

it was an 85 LX 5L 5spd.... I checked it out... I even checked the 82 out... These were basically factory cars. Hell I just looked at the one on my own 85 GT... and it's the same damned thing. And my GT is basically stock Body wise)from the original owners!
Plus in your picture... the screw hole do not mach up... these did... so does the one on my factory 85 GT. Like I said.. I don't see a difference other than the part numbers.
The thing is... I can see the obvious differences in your picture... the E3 looked dead on to the D9... now I wish I got the E3 as well... even if it was cracked up a bit
Different part numbers stamped onto cowls that looked the same.
Both the D9 and E3 looked EXACTLY like the one on the top.

I find it strange.
Also, theres a guy in my apt building that is the original owner of a bone stock 79 Mustang 5L notch... and IT's cowl lookes like the cowl on the bottom of your picture... believe me... I know that theres a difference... but not with these....
It's a D9 PN on a E3 cowl... I don't know what else to think.... WIERD!

maybe the date on the door tag was late in 82, but was actually a 83 Model Year

Which one in the picture I posted are you talking about? The top or bottom one? I'm almost assuming the 1 piece variety (top) but you still haven't specified.
Please note the difference in distance between the cowl and the LH (driver's side) wiper:
Old Style (82 Mustang)

Newer (85, wiper is much "closer" to cowl)

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking.

I was just looking at 50resto.com and saw that they offer a 79-86 Capri cowl... a 79-82 Mustang cowl and a 83-93 mustang cowl.
Were the 79--86 Capri cowls the same as the 83-93 mustang cowls? I don't know if they were cause I've never really taken a good look at a Capri cowl before.

With a 83+ cowl that had a D9 part number? That'd be a wierd one wouldn't it? Perhaps Ford made a mistake with the PN? It's possible.

I did say what one it was on my post! It's the one on the top... the one piece.... with a D9 part number!

Sorry. Yes, you most certainly did!
Then it sounds like the D9 part number is not right for some reason. The 82 car you saw must have been changed at one time...or possibly a late 82 changeover car? The problem is, the hood has to match the nose which has to match the cowl. If the cowl is the later style (part number not withstanding) then the hood must be a later style as well as the nose.
Often part numbers embedded or stamped in/on the part do not match at all with the catalogued part number. However, its not usually off by 1 character.

I can understand that it COULD have been a late changeover car... but an 83-93 cowl with a D9 PN... you'd think Ford would just toss the 83+ cowl with a E3 part number if it was a 82 model that was changed over to an 83 model. Why waste the Money on tooling changes just to keep a D9 Part number?
Actually... I find it funny.
Just to let you all know...I have posted pictures of the 83+ cowl with the D9 part number in my photo album.
