I know this is totally off topic but I just realized something and I'm completely baffled.

Ok, I had a judgement on my credit for a doctors bill. The judgement was for $828.00.

Now, I just refinanced my house and consolidated my debt and I was going over the papers and the mortgage company paid the doctor $1331.42. I called the company and they said they spoke with the doctor's lawyer and that that was the payoff amount.

I thought they can only get the amount they sued for and that the judge awarded them, am I wrong or did I just get ripped off for $500??

Typically the creditor can recover the amount for which they sued, plus attorneys fees, court costs, prejudgment interest and postjudgment interest. It all adds up quickly.

I know that all the court fees were included in the judgement, the original amount owed was about $500. I just want to make sure I'm not getting ripped off for money I don't owe.

Thanks for the reply :)

You should ask for an itemization of the sum that was paid to the doctor by the mortgage company, so that you can be sure that every penny of it was legit. You are entitled to that documentation.
