Well, tomorrow my brother and I will be heading back to the track to try our luck again. I want to be in the 12's so bad that I can taste it! You never know though. It's tough to get traction, especially if you're a newbie to the track (like myself.) I'm sure that his E.T. Streets will help out in the traction department. For the record, the last time out, we ran a best of 14.1 @ 102. I hope to improve on that. ;)

Anyway, tomorrow's event is sponsored by the legendary TASCA Ford from Rhode Island. It ought to be a good day. The weather is supposed to be nice and there will be Mustangs galore. ;) Anyone else heading up? 82caprittops?

ET Streets?

I hope you've upgraded the rear end (sorry, I don't know many people here yet to know what the have done and have not done).

Good luck at the track and improving your times!! I know how much fun it is to set and achieve goals. I miss those days terribly!

Yeah, we've upgraded the rearend to an 8.8 with all the goodies:

31 spline axles
4.30 gears
Detroit Locker NO SLIP positraction unit
Summit aluminum rear cover
3 inch lug studs

We've also installed Southside Machine lower lift bars and Steeda adjustable upper control arms.

Ya definitely gotta have the good stuff if you want to use sticky tires. ;)

One request for a picture from the track.

Sounds pretty good!

I blew apart a Pro Auburn (31 spline) unit a few years ago after my 12.01@111 pass (I TASTED 11's and had to have em!)

What's crazy about my 'explosion' was that it bent the tailshaft in my stock T5, twisted the splines on my driveshaft, EXPLODED my pro auburn (JUNK) and the U-joints were just fine... ?

Just do a good burnout, heat them up just like slicks and DO NOT BE AFRAID TO LAUNCH AND BREAK THINGS!!!

I don't know your experience at the track, so please don't be offended by my saying this.
Ignore the ricers, do not act like them. You do NOT need to do "dry hops" after the burnout. Your best launch is the launch after your burnout. Don't waste your time with "dry hops" and carrying on. Drive to the staging line and get ready.

I expect you'll pick up at least 1/2 second with the ET Streets.

14.1 at 102??? damn, you've got EASY low 13's in that thing, with your new mods I don't doubt you have a chance at the high 12's, I'm guessing it was your launch that was killing you??

you launch and 5000rpm now! you wont break i did a rev limiter launch (6000rpm) in my coupe and its got a stock 8.8 (gears and a rebuild) yours is much beefer and will take it i guarentee.

ps: launch at the end of the third yellow, i have cut a .506 with that theory on a .500 perfect light.

12.70 @ 104 with you at the wheel...
12.47 @105 with your bro at the wheel.
:)
That's my prediction.

I'm in the same boat '82Capri...
I want to go racin' so bad I can taste it...
but since the track moved the Wednesday night program back to Sunday afternoon, they stopped letting Mustangs and F-Bodies in for free. That $10 entry fee will buy me lunch at work for a week. :(

Maybe next week I can get out there. I put in a couple of extra hours at work this past week.

Well everyone, I kind of had a letdown at the track today. No 12's but kind of close. We are having major problems shifting this thing at high rpm's. Cruising on the street, it will shift fine (although I've had it "stick" in gear a few times at red lights and stop signs.) To deal with that I've had to shut it off, put it into first, and restart it. Then it shifts fine.

At higher rpm's, it doesn't want to do the 2-3 shift and definitely won't do the 3-4 shift. After a total of two trips to the track and 6 passes, we have yet to make a run without a shifting problem. Times have ranged from 16.5 @ 100 down to today's best of 13.3 @ 100 (with the 14.1 @ 102 in there too.)

We've tried adjusting the clutch numerous times (both at the transmission and at the firewall) with limited results. Frustration is killing me! On the bright side, I looked at two other Mustangs today that had the same Steeda adjustable clutch cable, quadrant, and firewall adjuster. Guess what? My firewall adjuster is mounted differently than their's (can you say, "I'm an idiot?") Due to this mistake on my part, it's actually mounted incorrectly. I'll be fixing this and we'll be going back one more time this month before the track closes for the season. I WANT A 12 SECOND PASS!

Anyway, here's the three timeslips from today.

Pass #1.............................Pass #2...........................Pass #3

R/T....857..........................R/T.....541........................R/T.....636
60......2.195.......................60......1.896. ....................60......1.754
330....6.028.......................330.....5.508.. ..................330.....5.394
1/8.....9.717.......................1/8.....8.412....................1/8.....8.355
MPH....62.58.......................MPH....86.10... .................MPH....84.57
1000...12.747.....................1000...11.102... ................1000...11.181
1/4.....15.059......................1/4.....13.379...................1/4.....13.738
MPH....84.60.......................MPH....100.05.. .................MPH.....90.42

As you can all tell, the car is all over the place! Both my brother an I know that there's a 12 second timeslip in there somewhere. That 1.754 '60 foot time (pass #3) is better than what my brother's 12.60-12.70 second GT runs and the 86.10 MPH in the 1/8th (pass #2) is what he usually runs on his way to those times. That's why we're convinced that we'll get a 12 at some point.

Hey Hissing, what kinda HP are you making? I think your setup is hotter than mine and I'm in the 12's. Believe me, I'm no pro either. I've only g-tech'd it though. I'm afraid of getting laughed at if I take it up to RT 66 to get a few runs in.

I'm guessing that I've got somewhere in the neighborhood of 340 horsepower at the wheels. I think that at the flywheel it would be close to 400? I haven't had it to the dyno yet, but it's on my "to do" list this winter.

My brother's car dynoed at 290 hp at the wheels. Our combo's are the same, except I have A.F.R. 185 aluminum heads vs his '69 ported and polished 351 Windsor castings. I also have the next biggest camshaft over his and a little more compression.

He still whips my car in the quarter though!

As for the pic's, I haven't posted them yet. I've got to resize them and upload to my gallery first.

This is my brother's friend Andy, breaking in his brand new E.T. Streets! The announcer was commentating on how he looked like John Force!

Were you driving or was your brother?

Hissing Cobra
10-03-2004, 10:24 PM
My brother was driving. I won't drive it on the track until it's just right. He knows what he's looking for in the car so I'll just let him play until he gets it there. If I drive it, it'll run a 16.5 or something hideous!

Once it's to his liking, I'll let my guard down and give it a whirl. I need to practice bad. I've only been down the track about 10 times vs. his 120+ passes.

If you have a chance, go to an event where Top Fuel Funny cars run...

high 4 second passes... feeling it in your chest is awesome.. BUT, make sure to wear ear protection....

And, if you take kids to track, MAKE SURE THEY HAVE HEARING PROTECTION... Even if there are not too many loud cars. They are not loud to us, but can easily cause damage to the younger ones..
:RANT OFF:

Because this is an IHRA track, the NHRA guys never come. They do have some events with Funny Cars and Jet engine Dragsters, but I've never been to see them.

I hear ya on the ear protection though. I took my 9 year old daughter up to Louden N.H. 4 years ago to see the Nascar race. We definitely needed to have the earplugs in for that one.

Hissing, not to bust your bubble .. but 340 to the wheels, regardless of your ET, would result in a trap speed of at least 115. Also, with 340rwhp, you should be shooting for EASY 11's given your vehicle weight ...

However, given your clutch issues, it may always be possible ...

Hey, you're not bursting my bubble. My brother's car ran a best of 12.53 @ 109 with his 290 hp. Him and I are estimating that with the larger heads, more compression and the next largest camshaft, we'll probably be in that neighborhood. That's why I was "guessing." It'll be going to the dyno this winter and we'll find out for sure what it's putting to the ground.
Other than those three changes, our entire drivetrains are the same.

Yup, I gotta agree from my experience. My car should dyno around 330-370, and I went 11.93 at 115,

lol, I dont want to be a butthead here, but you'll only get laughed at if you tell someone you are "in the 12's" and then follow it up with "on my g-tech". Just go to the track and start hammering gears!

Hissing, if the firewall adjustment doesnt work, take a look at where the clutch cable is routed, if its too near a header it might be heating up and stretching out/getting ready to break.

Dont be afraid of running slow times! How else are you going to get practice!! :)
