What is the best and worst smell in cars that you have ever smelled?
For me it's...
Best smell - Burning rubber (Burnout!)
Worst smell - Rear end gear fluid, Oh god how thats the worst

Worst Smell - Burnt rear end fluid... both out of the car and other "rear end fluid!", if you know what I mean....

Best: I like the smell of race gas.......
worst: without a doubt 130,000 mile old gear oil with the remnants of the original clutch packs and friction modifier in it.......oh and having said nastiness in your hair..

we seem to have a winner for the worst smell. Thanks to 50 proof, I've got rear end fluid smell in my 2 seater tacoma now for a week straight that just won't go away!!! (we pulled a turbocoupe rear last week) we both reaked of it.
best smell:Pizza on the way home from the pizza place
worst smell: tied between burning clutch, or stale farts still trapped in the seat when you plop down.

worst smell is a tie between the differential fluid and the smell of power steering fluid burning on the hot engine from a power steering leak

Welp, as a Auto Tech at a dealer, here is my thoughts on this.
Best Smell - Race Gas
Worst Smell - A pair of old socks under the seat along with a box of old chicken and fries on the back floor behind the seat, and last but not least, about 1 inch of water under the carpet.
This was a bodyshop job that I had to install a bunch of parts that were damaged in an accident. Needless to say, I used a whole can of Lysol to help disenfect the car of the odors so I could work on it.
Let me say this. I would rather have someone pour 5 gallons of rear diff friction modifier (smells like rotten cat piss) inside of my new truck instead of smelling that crap again.

worst smell, the dead mouse that lived in my air vents one winter. Using the air the first time was pretty bad. On humid days you can still smell it a litle

Try Fabreze and "Ozone" and other neutralizers.
Also, try to get some of the carpet smell good stuff (powder), then vacuum...

Try Fabreze and "Ozone" and other neutralizers.
Yea tried 'em. They work good for like a week to 2 weeks. Then it comes back. It is nowhere close to what it used to be tho. I used to get sick driving that car, even with the windows down! I'm begining to think a new interior will fix it!

Remove the seats and steam clean everything
I think there are different soaps for different stuff...
Maybe try pet neutralizer stuff.. works wonders on that stuff!
Or, take burnt rear end fluid (from the car) and dump it on the seats and floor... The smell of smoke will be gone!

Best- A big burnout from a car running race gas.
Worst- this is not a joke!!!! I also work at a dealership and had a 5 month old car with 3-4 LARGE human fecis piles jammed between the back seat's.. I almost puked and REFUSED to ever work on that car again..
Next on the bad scale would be burned 90 wieght from a Mack truck's rear end....

I dunno what the deal is with gear oil....for some reason, its a bad smell, but i like it in some sort of sick way? <shrug>

Best smell- opening a fresh, brand-new "New Car Smell" pine tree and putting it front of an air vent.
Worst smell- the mysterious stain on the back seat of your "new" car that looks/smells like beer induced puke. In August. When its 90* outside.

BEST: the smell of burnt rubber slighly over the smell your girlfriend's perfume, and her simply smiling and not hitting you.
WORST: burning(not rubber)! Rather it be a clutch, oil on the headers, an electrical fire, etc. Its all not good!!!

I run dex-cool in my '80 turbo tho, so the antifreze burning smell is extremely bad.

I work in an autobody shop so I get to enjoy ALL different kinds of smells. So here is a quick list of stuff I like or dislike:
Best: the smell of your own car!!!, gasoline (any), and carburetor cleaner (I have a can in the trunk that leaks sometimes)
Worst: puke, urine (human or animal), spilled tire shine that bakes in 100+ degree temps, dogs, flood damage, small kids that arent maintained and leave that thick aroma of tapioca, granola, and boogers. The only one of the forementioned items that has ever occoured in my car was the spilled tire shine. I can't wait for the day when I get to whiffff differential fluid (obvious sarcasm there!).

best.......the ink on a freshly signed title for a car bought and paid for! (this smell is NEVER replaced by the smell of a payment booklet that rides in the dash!!)
worst.....blackened swordfish dinner, projectile-vomited from the 4 year old in the backseat, all over the dash, all over the mommy and the daddy and the rest of the inside of the car.
*honorable mention for worst* he said he hit a dog, when the lift went up,the 'dog' was a skunk, mostly wrapped around the driveshaft, with peices cooking on the exhaust. the lift went right back down...............nope,sorry,can't help ya,pal..............
the swordfish deal was my car,i had to clean it up. the skunk deal was a customer at a gas station i worked at as a teenager.don't know who cleaned that up,but it sure as heck wasn't me! yeccckkk...............

So far I have to say in my car worst smell was rats nest and crap in the heater box assy. If it doesn't fade any more, I'm temped to remove the dash AGAIN and replace the entire HVAC and duct work assy.
Best? Not sure - nose don't work too well, which is why the rats nest must have been really foul...
Oh, and there was that Futura Sport Coupe in the wrecking yard that someone took a dump in the back passenger foot well. Closed the door and ran.

Best: New car smell with tire smoke and 116 octane race gas coming through the windows!
Worst: Not sure if it is gear old with friction modifier, or the smell of the mouse PISS soaked ball of insulation in the heater box on a hot day with the mixture of deodorizers trying to hide the smell, With the dead mouse still in there also!

Best: New car smell
Worst: This one was told to me by some guys that worked at the Lincoln Mercury dealership. They picked up ---- one September ---- a lease car that was abandoned when the lessor left college in May. It had some large boxes of what appeared to be shrimp and other seafood in it ---- which sat in that car with the windows up all summer long. Mhmm mhmm good!

best: burnouts and victory after beating a corvette owner and his $50,000 ride
worst: gear oil and the smell I had in my first car as a teenager. brother used it to get some kerosene for his heater one year and it spilled in the hatch. he then, for some reason, poured baking soda all over it and put drops of vanilla extract all over it. (somebody told him it would get rid of the smell.) I had to drive it for months with a kerosene/vanilla cocktail of a smell.

Best: definitely a good burnout.
Worst: for me would have to be when my Dad bought a 68 Cougar that had been sitting for about 12-15 years and had to drain the gas tank of about 10 gallons of gas. Stunk the whole block up around the shop my Dad worked at.

My first Fox Mustang was owned by a guy who took his German shepard with him everywhere. I did everything that I could to get the dog smell out of the car. But everytime the sun came out and warmed up the inside of the car the smell came back. I looked at replacing the interior but at the time it would have cost me more than what I paid for the car.

Best smell: Race gas in the driver's seat while getting mentally prepped in the staging lanes......
Worst smell: Turning on the air conditioning in the car after last night's festivities got rather wild; a drunken buddy at 2AM pulls a "poltergeist" and pukes all over the dash and into the air conditioning vents......

I think Dean T and I are on the same page!!!!!!!!!!!! I however got the odor out of the Z7. I took the entire HVAC system out and cleaned it with bleach and water (sanitized water) then soaked everything in FABREEZE. Now it smells great, even with the heater on. Good luck Dean T! I think I may have posted pics of when I took the dash and heater box and duct work out.
