I'm a service manager for Scotts Lawn Service (the gigantic fertilizer company.) I help out wherever my labor/skills are needed. Whether it's fertilizing lawns, spraying trees with insecticides, or fixing equipment, I try to do my best.
I've been there for 3-1/2 years and it's my second REAL job. Before this job, I was a house painter for 16 years. After all that time, I was good enough to go out on my own but, with two small children, my wife, and a house to support, I didn't want to risk it.
It's been a somewhat bumpy ride at Scotts, but things are smoothing out. It's actually kind of fun to go to work these days. ;)

My "normal" job is a NAPA counterman...it has its ups and downs. But on the side I am lucky enough to be hooked up with a show car company hauling cars and working custom car shows.( photography, awards programs, VIP escort, all around do it all ) I get to haul around such vehicles as the Batmobile (from the 89 movie "Batman Returns") the General Lee, KITT from Knight Rider and have even played with the A-Team's van!! Yes, these are slowly fading away and are quite dated, but, its still a blast playing with cars you once saw on TV when you were 10 or 12 and thought you'd never get to see in real life...now I get to drive them!!! In my spare time I play with one of my toys...usually wrenching on something!!!
ps-Yes, I AM serious about the side job!! 8)

GUILTY!
GF's step dad is an electrician. I did all of the wiring to my garage and he finished it (outlets, switches, into the fusebox). I offered to do the outlets to allow him to concentrate on the fusebox, but he refused.
I ran 2 12/2 and 1 12/3 from detached garage. 1 breaker for the lights, 1 for the outlets, and 1 dedicated to a single outlet (Air Comp now) for when I have something that will pull amps....
regarding the lights... I have 9 fluorescents in my 20x20 garage. May be bumping it up to 10 or 11 shortly....

I enjoy my job most of the time. Alot of my friends in this business are in it for the money (and most make alot more than me), but they hate their job or are extremely bored everyday doing the same thing over and over again. Right now, I'm working on an SVT project that I can't talk about, and a mainstream Ford SUV project that most people don't care to hear about.

I'd imagine a job like that would either require a degree, or TONS of expirence (something I'm gettin' at my job)
I dunno if I'd like designing parts everyone would use, for a big name company, or the stuff I do, making my own little parts for cars, so they all come out with their own unique parts with my initals ground in somewhere.

OK, here's the long version.
There isn't alot of actual styling or drawing done by us designers...which is a good thing for me since I kinda suck at drawing. Most of that is done by our Stylists and/or Engineers or whichever company we are doing the work for. We just take their concepts/ideas and make them work in the real world using 3D modelling. We do periodically have projects where we personally have to do almost everything from concept development through manufacturable product. And the job can get extremely stressful at times.
When I got hired at Roush, I just had an associate's degree in Industrial Design and Manufacturing and a couple of years in the design industry using SDRC I-DEAS (designing seats and interior trim). Three years of Auto Shop in high school and rebuilding a few of my own cars from the ground up helped alot when it came to the interview and getting me in the door. When I started, I was in the powertrain group, designing engine and drivetrain components mostly for Ford SVT vehicles. Then I transferred into the body design group after a couple of years. I have since been trained on Catia V5 and ICEM. I now work on interior and exterior body panels and trim, along with mechanisms and the occasional armored vehicle thrown in (non-military in this case).
A few people there have been hired with little-to-no experience or schooling, but were trained on the job (usually in the detailing dept) while taking some classes and pretty much started out at the bottom of the pay scale. The bad thing is raises aren't given out very often, so you have to quit and go somewhere else if you want a decent increase. I haven't gotten a raise in four years, but I don't want to go anywhere else yet just for the money. Fortunately, I negotiated a decent rate coming in. So basically, I'd recommend you get your experience/training somewhere else, then try here when you get to a rate you're comfortable with if you want to do this as a career. Umm...you'd also have to be willing to move out here.
Sorry if I bored anyone with too much detail. Any other questions?

It doesn't bore me because in a body peron/painting fraek, and designing new stuff is awesome, I wouldnt mind moving anywhere if the pay was worth it, I have 3 years auto body/refinishing, 2 years mechanics, 2 years welding, as well as 3 or 4 project cars, including interior swaps, engine swaps anddrivetrain (somewhat) swaps, as well as working for a detailing place...for a whole 2 weeks, haha I love car work and anything to do with it :D
