These are the only breakdowns available right now. Breakdowns on motor option, tranny option, colour, etc. are not yet available.
If you go to your Ford/Merc dealership you can get tehm to run your vin. Also you can spend a few bucks and go to www.carfax.com I believe they also list the original options in the car (so you know if it is a mix and match post wreck build up).

CarFax is not a good source of information for decoding purposes. It's a decent source to find out if the car has been totaled, odometer set back, etc, but it does not provide accurate information as to trim level, nor does it give breakdowns on numbers.
A Ford dealership can give you a decoding of your VIN, but little, if anything, else.
any car older than 10 years Ford doesn't want anything to do with.they say all the records are gone.

All the records are NOT 'gone'. They're stowed away and then warehoused.

Who did you talk to at Ford:?: :?: :?: I have e-mailed and called them about production information. Those in charge of Archiving said that it is all stored in separate places. As the years go by they move it because it is less regularly accessed by them. As of now the last of the 87-93s are being moved if not done already. They really do it a decade at a time. They do not destroy it.
Contrary to popular belief. The employees at ford were very very helpful. But it took almost 4 months to get the information I have.
Most of the information out there now is from websites like this one where people that love these cars have taken it upon themselves to compile information from owners themselves and put it into an orginized layout for people to decipher.
Props goes out to evlgt85 and many others who put a lot of hard work into this.
i don't recall who i spoke with, but they said the only info available for my
car was the 999 report.they could not tell me which dealer my car came
from either.as for oasis i contacted a couple of dealers that told me that
when the vin was punched in it came back as being too old,the only info
oasis had was that i had a recall done on it the month before.

Ford does have the info.
O.K. say you have a recall on rear defrosts on 86 mustangs. You don't want to fix all of them, only the ones with rear defrost. Believe me the information is there. It is also required by Federal Law that any automobile manufacturer keep records of all cars produced and what options are on each back to 1966 or 1967. I cannot remember the year, but the Government made all auto manufacturers keep records from that year forward. Ford definately keeps them on all vehicles. How feesible it is to put them to the public is very very minimal compared to the billions of dollars they bring in yearly. Their main concern is the here and now and taking care of the customers that just bought new cars. If Ford sees that it will be a good publicity stunt to work with someone to release certain information they will. But because of the sue happy world we live in they are very reluctant to give out the information this time.
I talked to Kevin Marti about 3 weeks ago and he is in present negotiations with Fords legal department on getting the info everyone seeks on the 3rd Gen mustangs. He is putting a lot of time and effort into this. But it is not a priority. He has lawyers talk to lawyers at Fords legal department on how the information can be used, accessed, distributed, and many other facets of the legal process. One concern that Ford has is that the information could be misused to cause insurance companies to use the information to sue them.
The dealer you contacted only looked into a certain part of the database. Each dealer has access to check and see if a recall was done on a vehicle or not. The only informatino allowed to be given to the public is the 999 reports because you provide certain info and own the car.
Ford will not let anyone get the information. Luckily there is an enthusiast who is a Lawyer in their legal department. If it were not for him, we would not get anything except for the info on sites like this one.

Yes, of course they have the info. Aside from the legal need for things like recalls, could you imagine trying to figure out your product's options and features and marketing strategy from year to year by not having access to this data?
A Ford Marketting and Planning meeting:
Joe: Dave, what's the trend over the last ten years for blue cars with cup holders?
Dave: I don't know Joe, the big guys shredded all that info. We'd have to go through all the archive build sheets and recatalog it all to figure it out.
Joe: That sucks, I suppose we can just guess at what the consumer wants. Maybe we'll get lucky this year and keep our jobs.
I have to (no, MUST) believe that they have ALL the info, sliced and diced in every direction. However, would YOU want your competitors getting that info? You want insurance companies getting it? NO WAY!

ok, im not sure you can answer this (ive been reading the posts above this) but i have heard from quite a few people that a 1986 capri gs with the regatta blue interior is super rare. does anyone know how rare????
I have a question about these numbers, were the McLarens for each model year just subtracted from the total production run or are they in addition too those numbers?

The McLarens would probably be included in the Mercury numbers. Specifically, they were all RS or 5.0 Capris to start. They were not given any special vin to set them apart, just yanked off the lot at Ford and sent to asc.
