My 255-40-17 on the 17x9 wheels are great. But they barely, by like 1/4in, clear the quad shocks. I took them off but the vibration was too much. Anyways I was thinking about puttin in a 1/4in spacer to kick the tires out a lil bit more and make more clearence. How much trouble is it to pull out the old stock lug bolts and replace them with 1/2in longer ones? Any part number for an extended lug for anyone? And how much to install? THX

Have you tried flippin the quads? The tires should clear then. Buddy mine had a 88GT and wanted to borrow my 275/50/15 DR's and we flipped the quads and they fit fine.

Joe,
You'll have to pull the axles to change the studs. It shouldn't take a mechanic too long to do. You'll end up paying for new studs, fluids, probably a good idea to replace the old fluid if it's newer been done, and some rtv to seal the diff.

Hows it going guys. About the quad shock. I did flip it and there about 1/4in at most clearence between the shock and tire. Im running it that way right now till I get a betteridea what to do. I used the cheepo monroes for them and the cylinder is long enuf no matter what way I turn it the wheel ends on it. THX tho.

Rob, what kinda $$$ are we talking about to do this? Rough est. Im wanting to run a fatter tire in the rear eventually. Probably a 275 or so. And right now there is NO way it will clear. Thanks buddy.

I totally removed my quad shocks. Some better upper and lower control arms are better than the quad shock setup anyway.

You dont have to pull the axles to install new studs, I did it without pullin the axles, just have to kinda snake the studs around untill you get them it, realy not too hard. I used to have 255s on my car and they had about 1/4" space between the quadshocks unflipped, now I have completely different wheels and flipped quadshocks and I have pleanty of room for 275s.

You think you may have the wrong offset or backspacing?

Thanks guys. The wheels are 17x9s. Thats why there is little spare room on the inside wheel. I too have about a 1/4in gap. I guess thats eunf? Im just worried about the clearence and I want to put a fatter tire on in the future. Figured a .5in longer stud would allow a 1/4in spacer for now and my current tires.
How did you "snake" them in on your axel 795.0pacecar? Dont they have to be pressed in? Thanks

I have 17x9's with 275/40's and they clear no problem, misses quad shock and tailpipe by 1/4". Hard corners scrub the fender though. I'll just have them rolled when I have the body done. I did not flip the quad shock either. I would question your backspacing/offset. You shouldn't have a problem knocking out yor old studs, but installing the new ones (longer) would be a problem. I don't think you can "snake" them in there. Use ARP studs, and pull the axles to do it. It just gives you an excuse to change the oh so nice smelling gear oil back there!

795.0pacecar, I wouldn't have thought there was enough room to do that. Did you put longer studs in when you did it?

Joe, I don't know what a mechanic would charge. You might want to try to do it without pulling them. I wouldn't pay shop fees for it to be done. The worst part of pulling the axles is refilling the diff, IMO. They don't have to be pressed in. They will pull in when tightened down.

I would try driving around for a while and see how it works out. A quarter of an inch would seem to be enough clearance. Save your money until you really need the clearance. Unless you go nuts doing burn-outs, your present tires should last for quite some time. Plenty of time to save up for new LCAs so you can ditch the quads.

Im tellin you you can snake them in there, my car is proof of that, I put slightly longer studs in when I replaced them, and to "press" them in, after I got them most of the way in I put a bunch of washers around the stud, screwed on a lug nut then tightened the crap out of it untill they looked like the other ones, BTW I did them one at a time, I didnt take them all out then put them all in.

Thanks for your comments guys. yes the tires should last a while since they are brand new. However, Im already looking into what I would change in them and seeing whats ahead with them.

I think Ill take the advice and let it ride for a while. If it becomes a problem then Ill deal with it. Sounds like a chore to get them in. I might jest try to snake a few in and see what happens.

I need ARP 1/2inx ? studs? I see 3in for sale in Jegs and stuff but what are the stock studs' measurements? Thanks again.
