View Full Version : 84 or 85 SVO not sure, in bad shape, what is a fair price?

I wasn't sure where to post this. Sorry if this is the wrong forum.

I stopped by my local junk yard this Saturday just to see what had come in lately. I saw the tail end of a black fox from a distance that I did not remember from previous visits. So, I closed in to take a closer look. To my surprise it was either an 84 or 85 SVO. It had the resessed front lights. It was sad. It looked like it was a theft recovery. There was no sign of it being in a wreck but it was pretty jacked up. The engine and tranny are gone as well as the hood and both doors. Most of the interior pieces appear to be there but it is totally torn apart. The seats are in pretty good shape and so is the body. Unfortunately, it is sitting on its rotors. No wheels.

I really don't want to see the car get scrapped but fixing it up would definitely be a labor of love. I am not even sure if the yard would be willing to sell it. I thought I would ask though. I really don't know what would be a fair price.

I will try to get by later this week and get some pics. Does anyone have any suggestions on a price? What should I offer?

Not much, I wouldn't think. The last one I had ran and was in halfway descent shape and I had a hard time selling it for $800. Sad thing is that you can part them out for more than you can sell the whole car for. :x

Yeah, I guess it is probably a lost cause. I am still planning to go by with a camera and at least talk to them about it.

Oh well, if they want too much or won't sell it I may snag some parts from it to use on my '82 Capri project.

Depends on what the boby/interior looks like. If it's something your interested in I have a spare 84 svo motor and wheels. i also have a hood and fender's.

Might be a decent save. Let me know.

If I can get my hands on it for a reasonable amount I will definitely be looking for some parts.

I won't know until I can get back by the junk yard which may not be until later this week. I will definitely post what happens.

I know where there are a couple of 87-88 turbo coupes in local junk yards. I am curious, if I pulled the drive train from one of these which would be more desirable the turbo from an auto or manual car. There happens to be one of both. I remember reading somewhere that they came with different size turbos but I don't remember which is bigger.

Any pointers on putting turbo coupe parts in an SVO?

Tanker,

If if you can't save the car, can you please get the VIN of the car and PM me or post it here? This way I can enter it into the registry at the SVOCA.

As far as turbo-coupe parts. The long block is the same. Stick with an 87/88 as the cam is slightly better. The 87/88 TC's use a smaller IHI turbo and the 83-86 TCs use the T3. The T5 tranny will be the same. The turbo's for auto vs manual are no different, only the ECU's/computers that control/monitor the engine is where the difference is. You biggest issue will be wiring. Hopefully the SVO still has its wiring harness intact & wasn't removed with the engine or hacked up. You can use the turbocoupe harness, but its alot of work. People prefer using Merkur Xr4ti harnesses as they are easier to work with.

I'd take Evil86LX up onhis offer if possible, it would be the exact correct parts you'd need.

Keep us posted.

I will definitely get the VIN. I will post more info as soon as I can get back by the junk yard.

Tanker, Did you ever get to the junk yard and find out about that car? Do you have a number I can call you at? PM me with it and I will call you. I want a few details about the car or some directions to get to the junkyard where it is. I hope you save the car. I am sure there are people that will help you with parts. I have a set of doors that are full power.

TANKER

I went to the yard today and got some pics. They are in my gallery.

VIN: 1FABP28T4FF101020 So it is definitely an 85 SVO.

Today when I was taking the pics I realized the car is in worse shape than my initial impression. The driver side front fender is dented pretty good. There is a dent on the top of the car that occurred from the inside. It is kind of strange. There is also a pretty good crease in the body just below the drivers door opening. The dash is actually broken on the drivers side so it would have to be replaced.

If someone wqas really dedicated the car could be fixed no doubt.

As far as price goes, the guy that was there said I would have to talk to the owner. So, I am going to try to speak with him tomorrow. I will definitely post what I find out.

I don't want to see this car wind up getting crushed so I will definitely keep everyone informed.

Is there anything special about SVO doors? Couldn't I just put any other fox door on it?

Just need to know so I can take that into consideration if I get a chance to buy it.

svo85
07-21-2004, 09:32 PM
Doors are the same as other stangs. Only body panels unique to the svo are the front bumper cover and the front fenders (they are drilled differently than other stang fenders.) aside from the bolt on svo specific stuff such as sail panels, spats,etc..

TANKER
07-21-2004, 11:18 PM
Sweet! That is what I thought. I just wanted to be sure.

I am going to try to buy the SVO and if the price is close I will try to get some doors thrown in.

It is probably a lost cause. It will cost a lot more to piece that one together than I could buy one for. It really doesn't make much sense. I just don't like the thought of it getting CRUSHED!

SEM has the correct color's of interior dye. According to the guy's over at SVO club of america ford liked to change vendors on the interior so no one is exactly the same. Just expect to re dye a good dash etc etc. Their are a few guys here that have done it with excelent resutls.

They can, but the parts I've redyed in my cars have lasted longer than the original color ever did.

I have gotten "SVO" pieces and they look the same charcoal color as the normal charcoal interior. I have also "heard" a few SVO owners say that the 50resto/metromustang charcoal interior dye/paint is identical to their interior color.

Sweet!

Well I have been trying all day to talk to the owner of the junk yard to see if he will sell the 85 SVO but I can not reach him. He is never there.

The guy I did talk to said he did not know if the title to the car had been turned in to the state yet and that if it had it was really difficult to get a new one.

Does that sound right? Does anyone have any experience with an issue like this?

silversvo
07-22-2004, 03:19 PM
If you get the car let me know. If you dont, email me the address of the location of the car. I will definetly save it, that is if the owner will sell the car. Let me know pretty soon because I am looking at another SVO(shadow blue) in Austin right now and might get my heart set on it.

TANKER
07-23-2004, 05:21 PM
I copied the VIN incorrectly.

The car is actually an 84 VIN: 1FABP28T4EF101020

Well, I finally got to talk to the owner today. I still don't have a solid answer. He said he would have to check his files at home to see if he had turned the title into the state yet. He said that if he had, he wouldn't sell the car. I am planning to stop by tomorrow and see if he has an answer.

Does this crap sound right? Has anyone ever dealt with a situation like this? I guess if a miracle occurred and I were able to get the title back from the state it would be a salvage title. What kind of problems would this pose?

I hope he still has the title. This SUCKS!

TANKER
07-24-2004, 11:13 PM
Well, I spoke with the junk yard owner today. He said he could sell it but that he wouldn't because of liability and such. Basically, I don't think he wants to mess with the paperwork required by the state to make the deal happen.

I am not giving up. I asked if he would be willing to transfer it to another salvage yard and he said he would probably do that. I have a contact at a major yard in the metroplex and I am going to give them a call Monday morning and see if I can make this happen. I am hell bent on this now. It has become a mission.

I will post what happens. If I can't get the car I will let everyone know and will help those that may need some parts off of it.

If I can aquire the SVO I will definitely need help getting all the parts together to restore it.

Hang in there, buying a car from a wrecking yard is a test of patience, it can be done. Thats how I got my 83 GT Turbo.

I bought my car from one of the larger auto recyclers out here, Ecology, and the whole transaction went fairly smoothly it just took a few months to get all the details (mainly DMV paperwork) finalized.

It you save this car it definetly goes down in my book as one of the best i've seen. It will need work, but between here and the SVOCA, we'll get her back together.

Good luck & keep us posted.

Here is the latest. I have been working with the second solvage yard and with their help I have discovered that the yard that currently has the SVO never received the title on it. They screwed up. So, I have run the VIN through the state and found out that the car actually has a clean title. So, now I am trying to track down the guy that the car is registered to. If I can find him and get him to sign over the title I should be able to go pick up the car. This is a major challenge. So far I have had no luck tracking this guy down. This afternoon I am going to drive to the address on the registration and see if he still lives there.

I will let you know what happens.

If that doesn't work, go to the library. Ask the information desk if they have a Polk Directory, most do. It is a massive phonebook-like reference guide. It lists contact information by name, address, or phone number. They usually have several different years. Look up the name, if you don't find the person, look up the address. Sometimes you get lucky with the person living there, or they know the landlord who might know where the guy went. Anyway, it is a great tool for finding people... Good luck!

Thanks for the tip. I may give it a try.

The most current address I could find is for a trailer park. The problem is it is one address for the entire park no lot number is specified.

I drove over there today and knocked on several doors. No luck. I am going back tonight to do some more knocking. I've got about 100 more trailers to try.

Man, this is a P.I.A.!!!!!! I am not quitting. I will find the guy if he is alive! I just hope the car does not get crushed before I locate him!

Well, I drove to the trailer park tonight looking for the guy the SVO is titled to and I found him. I gave him $20.00 and he signed the appropriate forms and let me make a copy of his I.D.

So, first thing on Monday, I will go to the title office and hopefully get a title issued to me for the SVO. I hope everything goes smooth.

If everything works out, I should be able to get the car in my posession next week. Then the insane hunt for parts will begin.

As usual, I will let those who care know what happens on Monday!

Well, I just got back from the title office. I was unable to get a title. The problem was that the fellow the car is registered to is from Mexico. The pictur I.D. of his that I had a copy of is from Mexico. The title office requires a U.S. photo I.D. He had a TX drivers license but he told me that it is currently suspended for a D.W.I. So, I made a copy of his Mexico I.D. thinking that would work.

Now, I have to contact him again and get copies of his license suspension paperwork or get him to get a TX I.D. card. I should be able to contact him later today and get the ball rolling on this.

The only drawback is time. The longer this drags on the greater chance of the SVO being crushed before I can get it.

I will post what happens!

Well, I spoke with the registered owner about his license suspension papers. To make a long story short, I think he is an illegal immigrant and has never had a license or any other form of U.S. I.D. However, I am certain that the car is registered to him. The laws seem screwed up on this. The state will give him a title but if he does not have it in his posession they won't give him another?

Oh well, all that aside, I stopped by the title office again today and spoke with them. The lady that I dealt with was very helpful. She informed me that I could go to my county tax office and plead my case with them. She informed me that they have the authority to hold a Title Hearing and if they choose so can send paperwork to the state to issue a title to me. So, I am headed to the tax office tomorrow. Hopefully they will see things my way.

You are the definetion of perserverance! If they cannot empathize with you after explaining the long draw out process you have been going through I would be truely PO'd. You deserve a great deal of commendation for trying to save this car going through the unfortunate bureaucratic system's rules. It sounds like you're almost there. Keep fighting the good fight!

I really hope the best for you. I may even have a few parts I could contribute or locate (the jy's are great out here) once you get the car home. I noticed it didn't have wheels for it, I will give you a set of SVO rims if you need them.

O.K. here is the latest: I talked to the county and they gave me some forms to fill out that need to go back to the state title office to get a letter that the county can use to issue a "bonded" title.......... this has become a roayl paperwork nightmare.

Bottom line, I think the county can help me get the title if I just jump through all the hurdles. i should know something soon.

I am not quitting!

TANKER
08-12-2004, 10:04 AM
O.K., here is the latest. The county tax office gave me a form to complete to request authorization from the state to obtain a "bonded" title. I completed the form and gathered up the required supporting documentation which included several other forms and two independent appraisals. What a pain!!!

So, I took all of that to the state title office and they issued me a letter authorizing me to obtain a "bonded" title. This has to be issued by someone licensed by the state of Texas to issue surety bonds, (most insurance companies). I took the paperwork to an insurance company and had to pay $150.00 for the bond. There is some kind of underwriting process. I should know if it is approved later today. Once it is approved the insurance company can issue me a "bonded " title to the car.

Once I have the "bonded" title in hand I can take it to the County tax office and apply for a Title from TX.

I hope all of that makes sense.

The process went smooth and the state will mail a title to me within 2-3 weeks. The title is "clear" not a "salvage" title!!!!
