I was looking into purchasing a set of 17" 98 cobra rims but i'm not sure if they are available in 4 lug or not. Also what backspacing would be required to bolt them on.

i dp not believe those rims are available in 4-lug. backspacing is the same as stock wheels.

Yes, '98 Cobra/Cobra R replica wheels are available in 4-lug.

Here is just one company that has them.

You can get them on e-bay as well. Here's and example http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2468831840&category=43957

afswheels sells these as wheel and tire packages sometimes too. They currently have none for sale on Ebay but you can keep looking.

The '98 Cobra rim and the '95 Cobra R rim are two completely different styles.

As far as i know, nobody makes the '98 CObra rim in 4-lug

Completely different, yet very similar ;)

Thanx for the info, I checked out those websites but they say that the 17x9's will only fit 91-93 cars because of the changes that were made. So does that mean that they will not fit on my 83?

I had 17x9 Cobra R's on my car for a while. They just mean the front fenders are smaller. I had some rub, but it was not that bad really

You just need to keep the tire diameter stock or little under by using low profile tires like 245 35's. Sure you'll get some rub because of the width but it should not be bad I am lowered 1" and have 235 45 16s which gives me a dia. of about 24 1/4". I only get a slight rub on the p-side backing up (not quite sure what that's about)

You could always go with the 95 cobra Rs and get the front rims in 17X8 size. I have these and car is lowered 1 1/2" no rubbing
