View Full Version : I will drive my capri this week (Dail-up warning!)

Yup, I am going to be daring, and say it. I will drive my car within 1 week. I am not on spring break so I don't have class this week. I requested a low amout of hours at work, and I am only working friday night, saturday night, and sunday morning. I have a lot of work ahead of me, and most of it is stuff I have never done before. First I'll update everyone with pics, and then detail whats left. Daily I will report back with whats done.

As a quick recap, I bought a 84 Capri back in Sept that needed a little work. Slowly the amount of work I planned on doing grew. First I bought

95 Cobra wheels
5-lug axles with drums
5-lug rotors and new pads
Weiand intake
Holley Avanger carb

I still needed some flowmasters, and a brake line to replace the one that was broken. A could weeks ago I found a wrecked 89 GT for $700, and grabbed that. Now I have a 225hp engine, better t-5, some flowmasters, the dual hump crossmember I need, the brake line, etc.

Now this past Thursday, I, despite common sense, drove my parts car home.

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/home1.jpg

Saying its in sad condition would be an understatement. But then again, its alright for $700

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/home2.jpg

The car has a prior salvage title before this recent wreck. The first time they did a half assed job fixing it, and it nearly came apart in the second wreck. After unbolting the other fender, hood, yanking the battery, etc. I could see where they did a horrible job welding on a new front end. A couple good jumps on the bumper, and it gave way.

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/pos2.jpg

Once I realized the fuel lines were barely connected to the front part, I unbolted those, and carried the front end out of the garage

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/nofront1.jpg

Ah, now we have room to work! I have already yanked the 7.5 from the capri, and already purchased a 8.8 with 3.73 gears. The problem is the bolts were destroyed in the removal. This made the install a problem. Since I bought the parts car, I figured I would carefully yank the bolts from it.

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/1week2.jpg

I have them all out except the LCAs. Those SOBs are not coming. Tomorrow I will probably have to cut the head of the bolt off, pop it out, and run to the hardware store. I recently bought an engine lift to lend me a hand. Never mind the crap on/over it.

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/1week3.jpg

I have already worked on the capri, and have the engine about ready to yank.

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/1week4.jpg

Here's a bunch of "extra" stuff that just got in my way.

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/fu.jpg

Now we are up to date. Now, the list of stuff to do is still pretty lengthy as you can guess. I will try and list them in the order I plan on doing them

*Finish removing the 8.8 from the GT

*Install the other 8.8 with 3.73 gears into the Capri.

*Yank the capri's engine/tranny and set them to the side. All I have left to undo are a couple wires, a few vacuum lines, and the motor mounts.

*Yank the carb stuff from the capri, meaning any vacuum lines, etc. I also have to yank the balancer so I can remove the timing cover to transfer over to the capri

*Strip the GTs engine, both the upper EFI crap as well as all the front accesories.

*Install new carb items on GTs engine

*Remove the GTs engine and tranny, and wheel them over, and into the capri. Then bolt up the front accesories

*Bolt up exhaust

*Install new front rotor ans pads, and bolt on the 95 Cobra wheels

*Install 5-lug axles, and replace the brake line

*Bleed the brakes

*Sit back, crank over the key, and keep my fingers crossed!

Well, there you have it. Time will tell.

Update

On the subject of the 89 GTs LCA bolts...

Well after now wasting even more time on it, they are still not out. Hell, even one isn't out. I have tried playing with the jack and jack stands to line up the whole. Thats what worked on my capri. We(my dad and I) have now cut off both ends of the bolt, and have beat like like a red headed step child. Its not moving. We finally took and break to grab some food. While out, we hit up the hardware store, and bought new upper, lower, shock, and quad shock bolts and nuts. After some searching i the garage before we left, I was able to locate one of the capri's LCA bolts that was pretty well destroyed, but the part store guy was able to match it. Now i'm gonna hit the bathroom, and go attempt to install the new rear in the capri. Currently the 89 GTs rear is hanging in there by only the LCA bolts. Talk about hanging low!

WOW! 8O Man, that's a lot of work! I admire your perseverence, and it's good that your dad is helping you. Hang in there, and DON'T GIVE UP!

As for the bolts, you may want to try using MAPP gas to help you out. That style of gas is available in little bottles, and attaches to conventional propane torch head units. It burns hotter than propane, and works really well when trying to loosen bolts.

Just heat the surrounding metal until it's cherry red (it will expand slightly,) and you may be able to get them out. When the heat is removed, the metal will shrink back to normal size.

We did this many times on my Cobra to free up bolts and nuts.

Trust me, I am very familar with mapp gas. Its usually the first thing I grab. I finished up my 1lb tank last night, and picked up 2 more this morning at the parts store. Now I am at a new problem with this damn car....

Here are the two posts I just made at the corral...

Alright, I am installing a 8.8 in my 84 Capri. The 7.5 is long gone, and I just slid the 8.8 into place. As I positioned it, I notice the shocks don't appear to fit into the slots. I grab a tape measure and notice the 84 origional shocks apear to 2 inches wide while the 89 GT parts car appears to have 1.5 inch wide shocks. Can I swap the bushings, or do I have to swap the complete shocks?

If I have to swap shocks, how do I get them out. As I tried to break the nut loose inside the hatch, the shocks simply turn. What would I do to keep the stock stead to remove the nut?

I swear everything that can go wrong is!

This 8.8 doesn't even have the brackets! Can I simply botl up the shocks like they origionally were in the capri? Is that bracket on the 8.8 needed?

This 84 is driving me insane!!!!!!!!

Well today's progress can be summed up by....NOTHING! :x

First I overslept. My parents woke me up around asked if I wanted to go out to lunch with them. I knew I needed some food in my belly for the long day, so I said yes. They said we could swing by the hardware store on the way home. They kinda forgot the hour long trip to the grocery store on the way home as well. I get home and check a couple things online. I then went down to install the 8.8 in the capri. As I get down there, my dad isists on giving a hand. He wanted to help get the old bolts out of the LCAs on the parts car. I tried explaining it really didn't matter since we got new bolts, but he insisted. After wasting over an hour, he gave up. As I start to position the 8.8 under the capri, my parents inform me they planned some dinner with relatives that I need to get cleaned up for. GREAT! When I finally get home after a couple hours, I go to install the 8.8. I get the LCAs lined up with the bracket on the rear end, and the bolts don't fit. They are 3/4s instead of 18mm :x Just great! I then tried to tackle the motor mount bolts, but can't figure out what size those are. :x I would start ripping apart the 89 GTs engine, but I haven't done a compression test on it yet, and still haven't gotten a straight answer if its 100% necessary to warm up the engine before the test. If so, I have to spend probably an hour getting the engine re-startable to do that. Otherwise, I would be ripping her apart right now.

I'm really starting to hate this car!

Hang in there man! There's been times, where I wanted to take a sledgehammer to my car. Sometimes the aggrevation seems like it isn't worth it. Just be like me, and look toward the future. When you have it all done and are cruising in it, you'll be beaming with pride. ;)

didn't you say that you drove the parts car home? How did it run?

As for the brackets, you should just transfer them from the parts car 8.8 to the one for the Capri. They should work fine.Removing the shocks can be a hassle, try holding the shock shaft from the underside, while loosening the nut from the top..yes,you will need help.Good Luck!!

By the way..what do you plan to do with the mass air meter ,ducting and computer?I am interested in them.

Yeah, I felt better, but the shower of rust sucked! I couldn't believe how bad teh 1/4 panals are. Those ground effects sure do hide A LOT!

didn't you say that you drove the parts car home? How did it run?

Yes, I drove it home. It seemed fine, but compression wise, it could be terrible. I am about border line of just skipping the test, and tossing the engine in there.

Yes, I noticed how I could transfer the bracket. That still leaves the problem of the shocks not fitting. I am gonna have my dad help me tomorrow remove them. On the stock 7.5 they were mounted as pictured. I think I'm just gonna do it that one. Its one less thing to mess around with, and it seemed to work fine on the capri.

By the way..what do you plan to do with the mass air meter ,ducting and computer?I am interested in them.

Hehehe, I am getting that a lot. I would love to be able to hook people up with a nice deal, but the mass air conversion, and the 140 speedo are about the only thing decent on the car. I need to recoop some of the $700 I spent on the GT, so I'll be ebaying whats decent.

Well I thought I was done playing with the rear, and then I noticed the rubber thing on top of the spring on the passanger side had fallen out :(

I redropped the 8.8, put the damn rubber piece back in, and got the 8.8 back up! :D

I just yanked the cover and the c-clips. I'm just back at the computer to find out what else I need to yank to get the axles out. Now I'm going to go yank the cross pin and cross pin bolt out of the tlock, and swap axles. Shortly I'll be running to the store for diff fluid. I predict a pic later of the capri sitting on 95 Cobra wheels on the back. The front will still be up in the air, but its a start.

You do not have to remove the cross pin to remove the axles. Remove the C-clips and the axles will slide right out. Be careful with the axle seals.

Well its 2:30am, and I am calling it quits for the night. Here is where the capri currently stands...

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/capricurrent.jpg

I have the carb, waterpump, and fuel pump off. I wanted to pull the engine tonight. I would have but i realized I need some washers to put on the intake bolts before I can bolt them to the engine hoist. I did manage to yank the above mentioned items. You can see my lovely bolt organization with the boxes on each fender. Dr. Pepper got the waterpump, and the plug wires got the Timing cover bolts that were accesable. I also unbolded 90% of the parts cars' exhaust. I would have removed it, but there are people here trying to sleep. Tomorrow will be a long day, starting out with a parts run

intake gaskets
carb gaskets
sale at Sears :D
water pump
thermostat
radiator

and probably some other items.

Man you're moving right along. I think we're all envious of how fast you're making progress.

Its nothing really. I have been stock piling parts for months. Like I said earlier, I am a college kid on spring break, and I took off most of this weke frmo work as well. I don't have a girlfriend at the moment, and most of my friends went on vacation for break. In the last 4 days, I have probably spent at least 36 hours in the garage. A majority of the stuff I am doing is all new to me so it is taking twice as long is it should. While I don't think my goal of driving the car this weekend wil happen, it won't be more that a week after that. Tonight I sat in my car while working on removing the shifter handle. I haven't sat in her in months. Ah, the smell, the feel. Man I can't wait to drive this car!!!!

anyway, here's another shot of the beast...

hmmm, what did I forget to do while removing the engine? :(

The spring break car work is what i was doing this week as well. Except mine was much simpler than yours (untill that damn cam pully bolt backed out yesterday and caused all kinds of problems!) Good luck with finishing it up, your makeing good progress!

Made a little progress tonight, and learned a lesson.....the hard way.

I managed to get both dampners off the engines. I then decided to yank the timing covers. On my capri, I removed the top two near the thermostat housing, and then 2 more on each side. I noticed the two larger ones on the under side of the pan. I removed those, and gave a yank. It didn't want to come. I figured it was a 20 year old seal, so I gave a harder yank, and heard a crack. After a little more investigating there seems to be 2 more smaller bolts on the corners of the cover hidden by the oil pans lip. OH well, live and learn.

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/cover2.jpg

With a little help from my dad, I should have that piece out tomorrow without much hastle. After snapping that bolt, I know knew how many bolts there really was, so I went ahead and yanked the 89s cover as well.

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/cover1.jpg

I don't work tomorrow night, so hopefully I will get the timing cover bolted back on, and maybe slip the dampner back on as well. It would be nice to get the intake on also, but knowing how things have gone so far, I don't wanna push my goals for tomorrow.

I tried getting the snapped bolt out, but ran into some problems. Its a stubbern little SOB. My dad is going to look at it tomorrow. I had full plans on tossing it back on tonight, but as you can image, that didn't happen. In stead I worked more on the parts car. I have the center cousel out, as well as the dash. I also finally went ahead and tossed a couple things on ebay. Time to make some of my money back!

Well looks like I may have to buy a new timing cover! :x

My dad can't get the bolt out. We tried an extractor, but it didn't work. Now the bolt has a large hole drilled into it, and its stuck in there.

On to the progress...not much. I told me parents the parts would be there a week, two at the most. I therefore need it gone this weekend. Since removing the dash, tonight I yanked the doors and hatch. Its really looking like a parts car now. I don't work this thursday. That looks like the day the newer 5.0 will be dropped into the capri. It will probably still have the EFI lower on it, as well as the wrong timing cover. Thats ok since I need the parts car gone. I still have to yank the seats(which I plan on tomorrow) the rear end(I might just have to cut the LCAs in half) as well as any front suspension parts I want to keep. Oh, and I still have to make some calls as to who is going ot come haul away this POS. it will have to go on a flat bed due to a lack of any wheels.

:D Here she comes...

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/mw2.jpg

:( Or so I though. You know the saying one step forward, two steps back? Thats the story of this car. Do these motor mounts look reusable?

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/mw4.jpg

NOPE! After spending more time under the parts car tonight, its clear the valve cover leaks, and probably the rear main seal. I have two options. I could half ass it, slap the 84s t5 up to the 89s 5.0 and toss in it the capri. Second option would be to do the smart thing. Take a look at this oil!

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/mw3.jpg

That can't be good for a clutch. Plus it looks like crap. So now it looks like I am going to...

*order a new clutch
*have the flywheel resurfaced
*order a new pilot bearing, rear main seal and T/O bearing

Before those go in, I'll clean up that nasty oil mess, and she'll be good as new.

Yup, one step forward, two steps back!

Good news, and bad news.

Bad news is no, she's still not running. The good news is I did make some progress today. The lack of updates would be the result of 19 credit hours, and working 30 hours a week. All the previous posts in here were made during my spring break. Since my last post, I have made at least the $700 my parts car cost me, so thats great. Anyway, here's is basically where I left off at the last post...

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/np1.jpg

I got the engine out of the parts car, and now need to get it ready for a carbed application. As I said in my last post, since I knew the clutch wasn't the best probably, it should be replaced. The old owner of the car did say it "felt" like it had a racing clutch in it. Anyway a couple days ago I swung by autozone and picked up their clutch kit(clutch, pressure plate, T/O bearing, and allignment tool), a starter, a pilot bearing, and a rear main seal.

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/np2.jpg

Well it was now time to starting yanking stuff off the engine. First came the starter.

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/np3.jpg

Look at the top. Yes, it honestly rusted through!!! After wiping off 155K miles of leaking oil, I discovered it appeared to be the stock starter. WOW! No wonder it was starting to go bad. Next I yanked the bellhousing, and examined the "racing clutch."

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/np4.jpg

Wow, the stock one as well, complete with ford part numbers. Not like I care, I have all new stuff, and a freshly resurfaced flywheel waiting to go in. Here a look at the other motor mount.

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/np5.jpg

Not as bad as the other one, but still not good. I have some nice convertable motor mounts sitting here just waiting to be bolted on. Now you are probably wondering about all that oil on the side huh? Well, I pulled the valve cover, and tada....

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/np6.jpg

A nice crack in the valve cover gasket. That could surely explain the mess. I unbolted the clutch with ease. I was then left scratching my head. How the hell am I gonna get the flywheel bolts out? After a couple minutes of looking around, I had a brainstorm.

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/np7.jpg

Ok, I'll admit its not the most fancy way, but it worked just fine. I had all the bolts out in no time. It was the time to go into uncharted areas for me, and remove the intake. I have seen pictures of all the sludge in high mile motors, so I was ready for the worst. I removed the bolts, grabbed on to the fuel rails, and lifted her out.

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/np8.jpg

8O DAMN! I guess one of two things. Either the past owners took good care of her, of when she received a salvage title, the engine was replaced/rebuilt? Either way, I'm happy. I spent a good portion of the evening scraping away gasket material both on the heads, front of the block(timing cover area) as well as the timing cover itsself. If I never scrap another gasket, I would die a happy man. Anyway, here's how she currenylu sits with the heads all cleaned up, and ready for a stealth intake.

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/np9.jpg

Whats gonna get done tomorrow? Who knows. 8)

Ok, sadly, there is more bad news. Honestly its both good and bad, but here goes. I have my last finals for college monday and tuesday, so those previous nights I will be busy studying. Then on wednesday I graduate. Thursday morning I am jumping in the notch, and heading south to St. Louis for WFC. I will get back late sunday the 16th. The 19th I'll be busy packing, and the 20th I jump back in my notch, fully loaded, and am moving to FL. I get hired through an internship with Walt Disney. They give me a job, as well as some classes, and put me up in a really nice apartment for really cheap. I'll be doing that till at least Jan 3rd, 2005.

So as for the capri, it will continue its hibernation until 05 probably.

:( Nope, its not going to happen

Alright, the day got off to a late start, and then my family made plans for the family to evne more delay work. Then after making a parts run, I was extremely behind. As for today's progress...

I started to getting the pilot bearing out. I needed some encouragement to get going, so I did a little mock up setting...

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/end02.jpg

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/end03.jpg

Ah, she sure does look good! Here's a shot of the new carb Vs. stock

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/end04.jpg

Here's a nice shot of the capri and its current state working as a shelf. :(

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/end05.jpg

I decided to yank the intake of the capri's stock engine to get all the sensors and stuff off. Here's the inside.

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/end06.jpg

Haha, my 89s engine has nearly twice the miles and looks better. Here's the stock intake and all its lines, bolts, etc

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/end07.jpg

I would really like to thank ford for putting the front bolt in an area thats a pain to get it, and stops the bolt from coming out all the way. :x

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/end08.jpg

While having dinner with my family I did a little calculations on my napkin, and my time's up. I don't have any free time until the 17-19th. On the 20th, I leave for Fl. So, that also means during those 3 days, I have to pack, do some last minute shopping, tie up some loose ends before I leave, say my goodbyes, etc.

Yup, time's up. I guess I kinda lied about free time. Technically I have a couple hours tuesday night. During that time I need to get the new pilot bearing in, flywheel, clutch, bellhousing, tranny, and toss the SOB in the capri. On the 17th, I am gonna box up all the parts, label all the bolts laying around, and hang up my mechanic gloves.

After supper I managed to get the new motor mounts on(being that they are a necessity to get the engine in come tuesday)

http://www.mustangmods.com/data/151/end09.jpg

I think the new ones look a little bette huh?

Well, this is pretty much how the capri's gonna be for the next 8 or so months. :(

Hey at least this way you have something waiting for you when you get home and that 8 mons will be gone before you know it. You should have just enough time to have it ready to drive dwn to WFC '05. Hurried projects never work out either you forget something or don't do it just right and it all usally costs money. Good luck. Maybe I'll see you next weekend at WFC.

PS A little hint I found a long time ago on pilot bearing removal, pack the cavity full of grease and then find a punch or bolt that will slide in pretty snug and the grease should hydraulicly push it out it worked for us once.

Wow, holy back from the dead batman.

No real update as of now. I had thought of an EFI conversion, but my lead on a 86 harness fell through. That, and I am moving into my first apartment in the next week. Sadly, its garageless. So right now, the capris still in IL, with no exact plans.

Nope, not really. I left the car in IL as mentioned in pieces. While back in IL a week ago, here's what went down.

Still empty...

Well it's been a while now and sorry I havent got pictures to post. I have been really busy lately. Where the car stands right now...
The new clutch is in and the tranny was put back in on Sunday.
New starter was put in on monday. The stock headers that the engine had are bad due to a flange problem. On the passenger side the bolt hole is completely cut off, So I have a new set of headers coming from summit racing and should be here by friday. I brought the drive shaft here to work and cleaned it up for something to do in the mean time and Painted it a high gloss red. I need to stop in the morning and pick up the crank seal that fits in the front timing cover. More later... ;)

While putting the intake on sunday my buddy Joe had an awesome idea for the capri. We are going to shape some forms to make a fiberglass scoop for both sides of the front air dam. I'll give the lowdown on whats been going on.
From the beginning:
-Completed the 5 lug conversion.
-Completed cleaning out car
-Completed pilot bearing removal and put a new one in
-Completed the Flywheel and new clutch install
-Put tranny back in and bolted it down. Drive shaft was painted and put in.
-Completed intake install and Carberetor install.
-Completed MSD ignition install and New distributor install
-Got a little excited and broke a valve cover while tightening...Long story
-stripped and crimped new accell 8.8 race wires
-installed new flowtech headers (gt header flanges were cut off)
-bought and installed fan shroud from ebay
-bought and installed radiator hold down from ebay.
-water pump installed of course
-alternator was put back in
-Power steering pump has to be bolted on
-Battery was moved to driver side to make room for MSD
-Used a 89 fan shroud with overflow tank to take place of the old one.
-reusing stock air cleaner with K&N air filter
-All new fuel lines (bending this weekend) and Brake lines.
-Installed Holley Red fuel pump because 89 block does not have mechanical fuel pump concentric.
-Installed new harmonic balancer
-Installed March Underdrive pulleys on Water pump and Crank

I think that is it. Its been a ride. But I have learned an immense amount of info about these cars. 8) :tu:

kevin, you should see my switch box for the fuel pump. I took out the ash tray and cut the bracket for it here at work then I bolted each side to an aluminum bracket with holes for LED toggle switches. I had to use the milling machine for the holes which ended up turning out just perfect. So to make sure the fuel pump is on you need to flip up the ash tray cover and flip the switch. It looks awesome and you wouldnt even know its in there. 8)

I got all my issues with the car sorted out this weekend! I had to get the rest of the fuel lines hooked up and the pump primed. We had a few leaks but nothing major that a little tightening couldnt take care of! We had to get the long bolt out of the driverside head so I could get the power steering pump on it! Got the bolt out with a pipe wrench and then plugged it off. Filled her with oil and said to my buddy Joe "Should I turn the key?" He looked at me took 5 steps back like it was gonna blow and said "Alright go ahead!" I cringed as I turned the key and it whirled about 4 times and fired right up ON THE FIRST TRY! Oh YEAH!!!! 8) Not even a miss, it runs beautifully. Just need to do some minor tuning now and fix the rest of the brake lines.
