 Hey, Im new to the board and want to say Hi, so Hi! Anyhow, what is the designator in the vin to indicate wether or not a Mustang is a real Cobra? There is a car by my house for sale, it looks to be an 82 or so hatchback. The thing is badly screwed up, terrible paint, loads of rust, missing trans, like I said a basket case. It does have Cobra badging on the dash and door panels, and it is a V-8 car. I doubt they want much for it, 'cause it's such a mess. I just wanted to know for sure it was a real Cobra before I even bothered asking what they want for it. Any suggestions? Thanx in advance.

There is no way to tell by the vin number. You would have to look at the buck tag located on the radiator support to tell for sure. It should say CBR somewhere if its a cobra. I seriously doubt it is a clone though especially if its in that bad of condition. There are still to many out there and not enough demand to start making clones out of them.

 I don't think the handles were down low.(I had a '79 notch in highschool) I'm not sure if it was a '79 or not, I'm just taking a guess there. I think it had late model tails in it as well. I haven't been under the hood but the trans is clearly missing. It also has a craptacular red and white racing strip paint scheme, ick. I may bug them about it for grins tommorrow, but I wouldn't give 'em more than $100 for it though, that bad...

 I stopped off and looked at the car today, it's definately a '79. It has an '86 or newer LX wing on the trunk. I didn't call them yet, maybe tommorrow. Poor thing.
