Hey guys,
Well im going for a new engine and at first i was thinking about an 86 Stangs V8.
now i think id like more options with my motor and im woudnering if anyone knows of a good common but powerfull motor that would fit in my car.
Ive got a 1980 v8 small block in there but i dunno the size (stock for my car)
Id perfeer a 5.0L since theres alot avalible for that size engine, not like the 4.2L
Im going to be going to the pick-a-part places and such in the next few weeks and wanna know what i should kepe an eye out for.

86 will fit but a better choice would be an 87 and newer as they had a better flowing head design.

Any 5.0 will be an upgrade, but keep your eye out for a 85-94 roller 5.0 motor.

85 would be best if you could get it complete with dizzy, etc etc. Then you wouldnt have to worry about swapping front covers to use a mechanical pump etc..
Any hyd roller 85-93 will work, but i dont like 86..

you might pay a little more, but look for a complete 5.0 out of an Explorer. Roller block, GT40 intake and heads. :)

i like the 86 motors , yes they have bad heads but made a lot of tourque, the 86 blocks were stronger to , and they had the simize bores , if any thing get you some 87 E7s and put on it . my 2 cents

Unfortunately, the reason the '86 made such a good torque curve is those "rotten" heads. Sadly the design allows for fast moving small amounts of air... so the engine runs out of air at upper RPMs

Ok, so why an explorer engine? What Year? This would be a v8 engine? Im looking for something that will have power,a nd for some reason i wouldnt think of an explorer, my friend agrees with the explorer engine.
Would this be a EFI engine?

Explorer engine has GT40 heads and makes more torque than a mustang 5.0 and it is efi but you can use a carb intake an any 5.0

Now that I have my 3.73's on, I can really see this, the car simply runs out of hp on the upper end.

Years ago when I was bracket racing my '86 on a regular basis, I let a good friend make a few passes in my car.
His best pass was close to my own, a 9:45
When we talked about his thoughts he told me that my car launched harder than his! His was a '79 Monte Carlo that ran 8:40s. He also commented about how it would have launched even harder if I had a good converter.
His other thought was how the car fell flat on it's face on the top end. :(

Back to the explorer questions. Is there a specific year i sohuld be looking for? or any general 5.0L v8 from an explorer?
These will also fit in my car with no real hassle right? Theres the stock 255 4.2L v8 in there right now.
Also final question for now, how much HP/torque/other stats will this engine have with the roller block and gt40 intake and heads?
