The check digit is just a digit to check the validity of the VIN.

For some reason I didn't get the info you guys did.

You didn't get the same or similar information because your VIN is from a '79 model.

'65-'80 models have an 11-character VIN.
'81-present models have a 17-character VIN.

Thanks I get it now. But what do the last numbers mean.

The last six characters are called the Consecutive Unit Number or Basic Production Number or Serial Number or whichever similar term you might hear or see or read. For Mustangs, the fist "unit" for any model year starts with 100001 and goes up from there, no matter what roof type or model type is happens to start out or end up as. Just an FYI: the (Fox platform) Capri units start with 600001.

So your car was Mustang # 287,491 (out of 369,936) of the '79 model year.

I got something all different ....my car was built 11/83 ....title said 84 model year ...and the decode said 85 ...and my vin is not valid ...133450 maybe I missed a number n the vin ...not enough characters ...I'll go out and re read it . and try again ...I've already been told that an 84 didn't come with grey w/red piping interior ...

Just to put in a little more info on that, the 79 pace cars 6th consecutive unit number MUST START WITH 48 or it is not a true pace car. :)
