Just picked up an original clean 86 gt t top for $1100.
I have not seen many of these at all, anyone know of the rough production #'s on these for 1986??

There were 40,578 Mustang GT hatchbacks produced in '86. If you would like to know how many were produced with the same exterior color, interior color, and transmission as yours, you can try:

If you want to know how many were produced with the T-roof, you're out of luck. NOBODY has those numbers available. Yet. Anything you see, hear, or read regarding an actual number is bogus information.

That is just too bad. I would love to see statistics.
I have an 86gt vert, and only 9000 of them were made, which makes it slightly rare.
I have however seen almost no other 86 gt t top cars before, and would be willing to bet there was only a couple thousand or so made.
Is there no way to obtain proof?? Ford won't cough up the info??

Read the following:
http://www.mustanggt.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=000311
Also, keep in mind that T-roof conversion was not done by Ford. It was done by Cars and Concepts which is no longer in business (there were mergers and acquisitions along the way). Now Ford should have information, somewhere, of each and every vehicle that was sold with the Roof "T" option (Regular Production Option 21D) but as of yet that information is unavailable.

I am the one ("Goodson") that started that thread that FoxChassis posted a link to. The information is not easy to get. I contacted ford via e-mail and got to talk to those in charge of of Archiving personally. The information is there but is presently being moved off site to Fords storage facility. Most of the information is already offsite. But until it is all there it is not totally accessible except for what is already there. The 79-93 mustangs are kind of split right now. If my calender is correct. They should be winding up the move sometime soon if not already. There is only one person that I know of that is doing detailed research on this and is trying to come up with information that is easy to decipher. Believe me, he is neck deep in it and is trying to get the information to the public. But as usual Ford has several hoops to go through for this process.
BTW. Where did you get the 9,000 GT vert #??

The less than 9000 #'s are the #s posted everywhere. I believe I found those specific #'s on the gt registry page and somewhere on this site. The production #'s on verts are known, just not the t tops.

http://www.mustanggt.org/gtnumber.htm#total
According to that list, 9,887 '86 Mustang GT convertibles were produced out of a total of 50,465 '86 Mustang GTs (total meaning both roof types - convertible AND hatchback). So about 1 in 5, or 20%, of the 50,465 '86 Mustang GTs produced were convertibles.
Along that line of logic, an '86 Mustang GT is rare in itself since there were 224,410 '86 Mustangs produced but only 50,465 of them were GTs (about 22%).
Now a case for an '86 GT convertible being rare could be made if you compare it to the TOTAL number of units produced for the model year. That would make the '86 GT 'vert about 4% of total production then. :)
"Rare" is open to interpretation and/or in the eyes of the beholder I suppose.

Make that less than 10,000 and I will agree with you. That is why I asked. less than 9,000 is not the same as 9,887. A lot of information is passed around incorrectly about these cars. Sometimes I get picky. It depends on the mood I'm in. I guess I was being picky that day.
I am aware of the numbers and where they come from. I just really wanted to make sure you did too. Some people pass off things which are hearsay. obviously you did enough research on your own. Most people don't. I definately applaud you for that. Sorry if I came across rude. :)

That sucks, I would be disappointed if I sold those too.
I have pulled up the research myself a dozen times on all the production #'s. I hadn't, however memorized that #, and was obviously rounding down---non intentionally.
This thread however, will permanently implant those #'s in my head, just so that I don't pass on any bad info.
