Hmm, i do like the idea of the charcol, though i wouldnt go with the dark dark charcol, as it can some times look like faded black when against another grey. If it were me, i would go with the light grey like you said, make it look almost like just clear coated metal ya know. And then do the trim in a gunmetal grey, like what the audi TT's were coming with in thier first years. That way you still get the dark contrast, but it has some more metal flake in it, as well as hopefuly less noticable fade.
Just my thought, it is your car after all. =)

I like the dark charcoal. I only wish I could get it in a spray bomb. Does anybody know if it is available in a SEM color? Is there a SEM # for it#

I need to do the same thing but I've got a few more questions.
Somebody mentioned an L8P color number. What paint company/brand is that for?
Just to confuse me, if you look at:
http://autocolorlibrary.com/cgi-bin/search/searchpic.pl?1985-ford-pg02.jpg
For a 1985 Mercury they have Flat Black #9381 for the black out colors. And what's odd is that this company sells a can of this stuff on ebay and claims its specially matched with the right texture and such.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2408052644&category=10076
Now from what I remember, the blackout trim did seem like it wasn't simple auto paint, it had a "texture" to it...reminded me of chalk (maybe my paint was just too beat at that time). So to spray it with simple charcoal autopaint doesn't seem right.
So since I'm thoroughly confused, could some kind soul give me the correct Paint code and paint brand to order paint for? I need info for not only the blacked out trim for the windows, but the trim along the bumper cover as well....and this leads me into another question...
I have obtained a fair amount of NOS side mouldings for this car...I have the door mouldings, rear quarter mouldings between the wheel and door and the left side fender moulding between the wheel and the door. (That pesky RH moulding is non existant for some reason, but I WILL find it). The rear and front mouldings that meet to the bumper covers are the old ones. I plan on cleaning them up and either using them as is, dying them the correct color in order to get them back to natural or painting them when the bumber cover gets painted...
My question here is, should I forget the NOS mouldings and just paint the perfectly good old mouldings so that ALL the mouldings all look the same? If I use the NOS mouldings and leave them unpainted (natural charcoal since thats what I think they're supposed to be), can I paint the front and rear side mouldings along the with bumper covers and have it look ok? and what paint do I get?
Mind you, for my own stuff I am a stickler for stock...well as close as I can get...so if I see an unrestored 1985 Mustang/Capri with different color/textured trim than what I have, I'm gonna rip things apart and start over....yes, I like my cars "back to stock". I get more pleasure putting something back to stock as some people do modding I guess.
Thank god I have an ascMclaren coupe which was nicely modified already. Yes, I'm a hypocrite in that regard, I like modified vehicles but only if they were done at a factory :D

Well I tracked down a NOS RH rear fender molding. There aren't too many left out there it seems.

No comments suggestions or smart remarks for my paint dilemma? :(
Oh well, looks like I'm going to just try and take a stab at it I guess....
I called the Ford dealer and they were a bit helpful...Ford has a Dark Charcoal color listed as 1Y...However, I know from the 1985 Mercury dealer color book that that code is for the lower two tone paint for the 1985 Capri. I think I may have my paint guy mix a bit up and make it somewhere between flat and satin.
I'm also going to get that specially mixed blackout paint from that company and see if its close to any of the original pieces I have. Even faded, I hope maybe I can figure out which is which....
...as to painting the bumper trim, I think I'll hand the paint guy a moulding piece and see if he can mix a match...that rubber side moulding doesn't seem to be exactly the same charcoal color as the trim.
In either case, I'll try to post info here as soon as I get it.
Maybe I'll go with popsicle orange trim...it'll match the asc stripes. :)
Again, any info would be helpful...I hate buying $70 cans of paint I may not use.

Some more info, maybe I have it solved...
I got a Big A (autoparts) paint chip guide and for 1985 there is a listing for a few Dark Charcoals...it seems like Ford had 5 "Dark Charcoal" colors...everything from auto paint to trim paint to bumper paint....
1Y = Dark Charcoal Metallic - This is a Lincoln color and probably for the two toned Mercury Capri color schemes. Big A code 33633
6015-G = Dark Charcoal Metallic - Van Bumpers. Big A code 35177
6019 = Dark Charcoal - Striping. Ford/Lincoln/Mercury/Truck. Big A code 33982
5889-H = Dark Charcoal - Vinyl Roof Retainers, Window Mouldings, Pillars. This is listed for Ford and Mercury and has a Big A paint code Formula of 33876. It is ALSO listed a second time for Lower Band, Pillar, Mirrors, Windshields, Backlight Moulding and is for Ford/Lincoln/Mercury/Truck. <==DING!!!! I THINK WE HAVE A WINNER!!!!
I hope this helps somebody else.

I scanned and uploaded the BigA paint chip pages...
http://www.70megs.com/ascmclarencoupe/Literature.htm
they are fairly large scans and I had to compress them down as best I could to fit the site's file size limit but they aren't too bad.

I am using a low gloss black on my 86 for all the trim. I am very happy with the way it is turning out. You can get a look at 1 piece here. http://www.foureyedpride.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=12926#12926 I am doing the trim this week and can post a pic as soon as it is all done if you would like. I do have the driver side window mouldings done in one pic also but hard to see as it is in shadow.
