The carpeted deck of my coupe is gone, its blue dust...anyone have suggestions of what material I could use to replace it?

You could use vinyl. Marine grade would probably be better, as it won't fade quite as quickly. A spray can of headliner adhesive, and a staple gun would work to hold it in place.

What about base material...as the fiberwhatever stuff is as dust as the fabric itself.

A nice piece of Luann, or 1/4 inch plywood would make a nice base material. If you plan to have speakers underneath it, without visible speaker covers, drill a bunch of holes through the Luann or plywood before attaching the vinyl. After the vinyl has been applied, you can then take something like an awl and poke holes through the vinyl to allow the sound to come through. That will take some time, and the holes would have to be done in rows (the same on each side) to balance them out visually. It's a rather straightforward and easy job, but it's time consuming.

Yeah, I was thinking about which to do, speaker grills or the old hole method...which I will make a template...no ghetto there.

I had done a similar thing years ago on a '68 Cougar. The base board was in good shape though.I went to the fabric store and got enough to cover the board,I used black vinyl, and glued it down.I ran the speakers on top with the grilles.
Easy to do,and improved the looks 1000%

Bumping this from the dead just for grinns.
I picked up some pref board awhile ago for another project, the same stuff as the peg boards are made of. It looks like it'd be a good base for the decks. I saw someone on Ebay selling these replacement decks but they cost a bit more than i'd pay and lacked in the design department, and certainly didn't have provisions for speakers nor the third brake light housing.

So I guess some peg board material without the holes and some automotive carpet and a jig saw will do the track. If you have the original carpet covering and such it'd be best to keep that in as good shape as possible to use it as a template.

WHile your doing the rear deck, might as well do something to tilt the speakers foward a bit.

Only if space and ability permit it. Not too concerned however since it'll be on the cheap and sound quality isn't THAT important. Otherwise i'd be probably fiberglassing custom housings and all for the front, back, and kick panels. I may however go ahead and buy the pref board today and see if I can get started on it since I bought new speakers. However I don't have any material to cover it with.

Don't know where to go from here yet especially since I don't have anything to cover it with.

i am gonna gonna pull mine (it is dust too) and make some fiberglass speaker boxes to tilt em forward. will probly do with some carpet ontop of that or texture it and paint to interior color.

I might just cut the whole deck out since I'm deleting the rear seat. Then fab up a new deck at a forward angle for some speakers. We'll see.

From the inside. Would've liked to go with a thicker variant of this stuff but went the cheaper route. Had enough material to make two.

That'd be the way to do it. Some MDF rings or whatever and mold um up.

So what material did you make this out of ???

Its similar(or the same) to the material peg boards are made out of, but just with no holes. Forgot what the tag said.

Receipt has it listed as "Hardboard"...

Still haven't a clue what i'm gonna do for the speaker holes. Need to go find fabric/carpet material from somewhere. Local Crafts and Stuff got struck by lightning and got serious fire damage so I have to travel to find the next closest store.

Went to the fabric store and they had some headliner material. Looks like what I want, but I'm not sure how well it'll hold up to the sunlight...if at all.

Definitely not the best work since i've never worked with fabric before, but i'm okay with the results so far. Need to get a razor and cut out the holes for the third brake light and drill holes for the edge where it is secured at behind the back seat.

Also took care of the third brake light since it was badly faded and I had some interior paint left over from when I painted my console.

I guess i'm gonna leave the speakers hidden for now and see how they sound.

All finished. The sound is coming through fine so I guess I won't need to cut it out or get speaker grills for the speakers.

Fairly cheap process. The headliner material was the most expensive costing $10 a yard and I got 2 yards just to be safe. The board was $7 or so.

has holes for the speakers, has carpet already on there, perforated hole for 3rd brake light and for newer cars, cut outs for the seat belts

I'm saving FMR for my dew wipes and weatherstripping :D. I like making things and this was something i've been wanting to make for a long time.

I would recommend against nearly all armor all products. They do more damage than good...cracked dash pads, etc.

Go with Meguires or Mother's.
