How could I tell if a capri vert is a McLaren? There is one for sale by me that looks identical to the McLaren in MM & FF's reader rides.

Basically, if it's a real Capri convertible, it's a McLaren. Here's a great link to McLaren specifics: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ascmclaren/?yguid=10984013 The guys there are the experts on McLarens.
Mercury did not produce any Capri 'verts, they were all hatchbacks.

Am I right to believe that my 86 Capri GS 5.0 is 1 of 3,303??How does that affect the value? And,not that you see many for sale, what are they worth, anymore?I kn9ow there are a million factors, but average price--Comparable to Mustangs?

Honestly, and it has been this way as long as there's been a Ford and a Mercury: Mercurys, despite most ALWAYS having a lower production number and therefore being more "rare" as a rule have a lower value than comparable Fords. Yes, there are a few exceptions, as always.
Rarity doesn't dictate value as much as desirability does. Unfortunately, there just isn't a huge market for Capris, or for most of the early Fox Mustangs for that matter. I've seen Motorsport/Grand Prix Capris that have gone up for sale, and no one would buy them...and there were only 30 produced. Ppl don't know about Capris. They've no idea about Turbo RSes, 5.0 GSes, etc. The only Capris that are good at holding their value currently are the McLarens. And the only early Fox Mustangs that are consistant about value are the SVOs. 85-86 GTs are starting to climb very, very slowly.
Ppl like you and I that go nuts at the site of a Capri or old Fox Mustang are few and far between. Therefore, they just do not have much of a market value.
I'm hoping that this site will help to change that.

Skye from the pics I have seen there is almost no doubt that this maybe a McLaren. Anyone on here interested in it. I would be willing to try and find the car again being for who ever is interested. I will be all over town job hunting now that school is done and I am unemployed.

Skye, thanks for the response..Ive always gotten alot of positive response from my car, people dont know what to think--"I thought it was a Mustang, but it looks different...",which always leads to the 'cousin to the Mustang' conversation..I'm sure you and Mike have been there.Iguess I just never realized how uncommon the really are..after all I see one every day!

Jamie, if you do happen across that car, and can get the information on it, please post it here in the FYI Ads section. I will also be sure to pass along the information the the McLaren guys, too, as they're always on the look out for these cars. I saw one running around this area last year. It's the only McLaren 'vert I remember seeing in real life.
Hehe, last year, Mike and I pull into a Ford/Mercury dealership...the sales guys (older gentlemen) couldn't figure out what the heck it was. At a MERCURY dealership. For shame. Sometimes Mike just explains the car away as being a Mustang. I get onto him about that. I suppose after having had a Capri (actually, two of em) for so many years, he sometimes feels it's better to just give up and say that it's just another 5.0.
There's an 86 5.0 for sale at a car lot somewhere around PHX. Mike found it online, but they're wanting too much money for it. I think it's around 5-6 grand.

I have a 86 Capri RS built in Canada. Do you have any info on production #'s on this year of Capri? I know they dropped the RS in 85 in the US but Canada kept it for one more year.
The car is an 86 RS, with 5.0L, 5-speed,p/w,p/l,p/w,p/hatch,a/c and 2.73:1 limmited slip rear. The car is grey in color with RS badging and RS chin spoiler. The car still has the phone dial rims with cathead center caps. I had to in stall the power locks and power hatch myself but the wiring was already there.
My plans for the car is to convert to a 351 and keep it fuel injected and a mild street driver. I have allready made the upper 302 stock intake work on the 351 truck lower (very easy to do). Then installing 3.55:1 gears in the rear. I have already put the 87-93 mustang rear interior pannels in and the glass. I made sure to cover up the mustang sign on the quarter windows to say Capri RS. The rest of the car is stock and will stay that way. I hope to paint it in the next year or so to the factory color or the Dodge sliver. I will take pics of my car soon and put it on here i hope..
Thanks
Shane
P.S. Is there anyone from Canada or even Alberta on here???

Howdy!
Supposedly the #s for the 5.0 Capris include the Canadian RSes. No breakdown available yet from Ford. Gotta love 'em. Heh.
We do have quite a few Canadians. If you'd like, start a thread in the General BS area and see how many you can rouse!
