Why do backwindows shatter?

I haven't had my convertible for long and have a question. I have read quite a few posts saying that back windows have broken while putting the top down. Why is that and how do I prevent it? Thank you.

Keep the quarter windows down until the top is all the way up or down, if they're up all the way they can shatter when the top moves across the edge of the glass. This happened to the '66 Stang vert my girlfriend's dad has and will also happen to brand new cars.
