I just bought my first capri, and would like to know how rare it is, as I am considering swapping trannies, intakes, etc. and wouldn't want to wreck something that was collectible.. I was told my car was rare but I would like an informed opinion from you guys...

1982 Mercury Capri RS 'Black Magic', T-tops, 5.0HO, 4spd, It has optional mags on now, but I have the stock gold anodized TRX rims.. The car also has headers, but they look stock to me. It still has all the 'black magic' striping, and the paint is OK, but I wouldn't mind painting it in the future.

Soo, any ideas how rare this beast is, or what the collectablility (sp?) would be??

Any help is appreciated..

tj

btw.. you guys have a great board here, and I look forward to posting more in the future.

1982
Base - 20,981
L - 1,079
GS - 4,609
RS - 8,817
Black Magic - 1,379
White Magic - 348
TOTAL - 36,134

It being a 5.0 and manual car, it is not only rare, but more desirable, especially with the T-tops. There are many straight six Black Magics out there. Well, as many as there can be with such a low production number car.

The headers are not factory. Ford didn't give 5.0 Foxes headers until 1985. Mike and I occasionally work on a bone stock and unfortunately, badly deteriorated 82 Black Magic 5.0/4speed car. No T-tops, though.

In all honesty, if all you want to do are minor mechanical alterations/upgrades, I don't think that will hurt you. I would, however, keep ALL factory parts in case you ever want to sell the car or you really want to make it a factory correct showpiece (hey, this mood strikes people!).

As for market value, it depends on the condition of the car, naturally. Also, the Capri market will never be what the Mustang market is. It's an unfortunate truth that Mercurys, despite their lower production numbers, are always lower in monetary value in comparison to their Ford counterparts. There is a small interest picking up in Capris, and hopefully we at this site can contribute to that. When the interest in the cars goes up, so does their value.

Glad to have you here, and we'll be looking forward to seeing you around!
