The 999 report is given out for free by Ford, and can include approx. build date, options on the car and whatnot. Unfortunately, though, as many (including the 82-93 GT registry) can attest to, the information included is not always accurate. For example, there are many Mustangs that have come up with having a "Black Magic Package." As we all know, that was Capri only, and isn't something you're going to be able to rationalize as fact on an 84 GT 350....

Anyway, here's how you can get yours:

US callers can order a report through Ford's Customer Relations Center hotline - 800.392.3673 (toll-free) or 313.322.3000.

In Canada, the number is 800.565.3673;

Ford Australia will take your call at 1.800.333.306 (toll free) or 9359.7023 in Melbourne. .

If you prefer to correspond by mail with Ford, USA, here's their address:

Ford Motor Company
Customer Relations Center
300 Renaissance Center
P.O. Box # 43360

To see what one looks like, I have one posted on my website.

I still think the black magic thing has to do with the converting to black trim for the model year as it seems that the few people I have talked to that had that listed had early 84's or mid year cars.

Go to mustanggt.org and they have a VIN/dataplate decoder. Just put the information from you car in and it will give you all the information such as original interior/exterior color, rear axle ratio, etc.

I checked the mustanggt.org site, it only decodes as far back as 82 ... I put in my VIN and doortag info, and it doesnt seem correct ... VIN doesn't register, as it isnt 17 characters long .. It's like 11 ... It worked for my 85 GT, everything is right on the money, matches the build sheet. I think I'll just wait on the Ford info, and see how accurate that is for the Capri.

1979-80 VIN's are only 11 characters long, 81-93 stangs are 17 characters long. I'm not sure how it works for capris but I would imagine it would be the same. I have the information to decode 79-93 on hand if you would like something decoded that you can't figure out. Just let me know.

another way to find out original color:

pop your hood, peer down at the radiator support, usually on the driver's side right behind the headlight assembly.

You should find a metal tag - this is commonly referred to as the BUC tag... it will have not only your VIN info, but most of the data codes that are usually found on the door stickers. Color codes will be listed, if the car was a GT/LX/SVO it will have "GT, LX or SVO" stamped into it. Also has info if the car had A/C, etc, etc....

Normaly these tags are either stapled to the radiator support, or screwed to it. If the car was ever in an accident, and the radiator support was replaced, or had to be disassembled/repaired, those tags normally disappeared.....or if the car was "converted" in one way or another by legal or illegal means, the tag will be gone too...

This process of "tagging" by Ford follows through on all Mustangs from 1979-current year, and most likely their other products.

Good luck finding it, it should have the paint code on it that you are seeking.
