Was wondering how hard to remove and replace sail panels and beltline
moldings from my 85 Gt for repainting.

I know I can reuse the sail panels but anyone have any luck removing
and re-nstalling the same mouldings.

I believe the color is charcoal grey for the color.

Finally found a board where it is not all 87 and up.

Fletch's board is also pretty informative.

the sail panels are easy, remove the interrior quater panel trim, and the nuts are visible, about 10 each side, as for the beltline, the rubber tears easily, and the last time I checked, they are still availibe, you have to remove the door panels and remove the nuts holding the mirrors on, and they come off easily

Thanks,

Are the door moldings the same as the others, just throw away.

The door moldings are pretty expensive I hear.

I am doing a complete color change back to the original or close to grey.
I like the 2000 viper steel grey color.

If I just mask them off then the color under the molding will not
match.

I think I may bite the bullet and get all new. If my body cannot do a satisfatory job on them.

I have a couple of them he can practice on. I think I like them painted
charcoal and not body color. A little contrast would be nice I think.

Thanks again everyone!!

The mouldings have a thin metal strip on the back of them, and if you just rip this moulding off, the metal strip will get all wavy and then it can't be re-used. Here is how I took off my side mouldings, and I was able to re-use them.

Find a wound guitar string. The thinnest wound ones work best. The wound strings have groves in them, kind of like a file or saw blade. If you know someone that plays guitar, they should have some old strings around somewhere.

Get a pair of thick leather work gloves.

Now the mouldings are held on to the car with 2 sided tape. If you wind the guitar string around your hands, while wearing the leather gloves, you can get the wire between the moulding and the sheat metal and saw the string back and fourth to cut through the two sided foam tape.

Someone told me that they used a hacksaw blade to cut the tape, but I would be worried about cutting through the moulding.

Once the moulding is off it can be cleaned and re used. You may want to go to a junk yard and try this on a different car first. Be paitent, this process will take about an hour or two, but a set of NOS mouldings are about $150-$200.
